Res Artis Board Member Jean-Baptiste Joly attended MAT-A.I.R. 2019 in Matera
Organised by our Res Artis colleague and friend Paolo Mele (director of Ramdom and project manager for Matera Basilicata, European capital of culture 2019) the conference ‘ MAT-A.I.R. 2019 Come & Seed, growing new models of artistic residencies’ took place on November 15 and 16 in Matera, Italy. The participants were representatives of artist residencies based in Italy who wanted to meet and discuss in order to coordinate their activities. Among the panelists were also representatives of the Italian ministry of culture as well as from the municipality of Matera. Jean-Baptiste Joly left the gathering with the following impression: “Though no official promise was done by the decision makers this conference will surely have positive consequences on the future of artist residencies in Italy (there are more than 130!) regarding public funding and official recognition of their role in art and culture. Representing Res Artis at this conference I presented our network, gave an overview about arts residencies as a global phenomenon and an insight into problems and challenges.” |

Survey “Monitoring and evaluating residencies”
Within the framework of our Res Artis Meeting Kyoto 2019, we included a session on evaluation led by Lea O’Loughlin (Res Artis President of the Board, Acme Co-Director, UK) and Marianne Magnin and Mafalda Dâmaso from the Cornelius Arts Foundation (UK). The panelists developed a survey on “monitoring and evaluating residencies”. Please help us drive the research and development in the field and fill in the survey here. |

On The Move resources: Mobility Information Points
Mobility Information Points (MIP) are information centres and/or websites in several European countries, and one in the USA, who aim to tackle administrative challenges that artists and cultural professionals can face when working across borders. Relevant issues can be around visas, social security, taxation, customs etc. MIP are usually key players at national and European levels who advocate – together with other networks and organisations – for better conditions for artists and cultural professionals working internationally. MIP are member organisations of On the Move, the cultural mobility information network active in Europe and internationally. |

IETM Plenary Meeting Tromsø 2020
The next IETM Plenary Meeting will be taking place in Tromsø, Norway from April 30 to May 3, 2020. The theme of the meeting is Activism - fitting for an area now in the midst of global attention due to the region's natural resources and strategic location. The fate of the melting Northern ice cap is a hot political topic, and a new set of challenging power dynamics between different nations has entered the stage. IETM Tromsø will discuss, digest and discover the role of activism in our art form, the relation between art and politics, and art as protest. What differs artistic activism from regular activism? Does it have any impact? Are we preaching to the converted? Can the performing arts change minds and bring people together despite the compelling divergence of opinions? If artistic work gets political, are there aesthetic compromises to be made? Historically a hub for international trade and exchange, Tromsø is home to many different cultures, including several Sami communities, and has a resourceful and diverse artist community that is looking forward to hosting you during the plenary. Both IETM members and non-members are welcome to participate. Deadline early-bird registration: April 2, 2020. |
