ADVERTISING The IAB Technology Laboratory released SIMID (Secure Interactive Media Interface Definition) for public comment, a specification designed to replace VPAID (Video Player Ad Interface Definition) and increase transparency. “With SIMID, Tech Lab is responding to the needs of the evolving video advertising marketplace, creating an interactivity solution that should become a critical part of the video supply chain and will promote transparency and security,” said Dennis Buchheim, SVP and General Manager, IAB Tech Lab. “Everyone who has relied on VPAID for interactivity should please review SIMID and provide us with feedback, so it can become a critical part of the video supply chain and drive greater transparency across the ecosystem.” To optimize its algorithmic data services offerings, Cox Media Group’s Videa will include textual metadata from Red Bee Media in their next-generation system. Red Bee Media will be providing textual scheduling data up to 14 days in advance and 30 days prior, as well as archived data from its database, to provide network programming changes and algorithmic ratings estimates for automated linear TV sales over Videa’s platform. “We are looking forward to continue innovating – leveraging this data to make broadcast TV easier to buy and sell,” said Brett Adamczyk, VP, Business Development and Strategy, Videa. “Red Bee Media has an extensive supply of analytical data, with years of archived data coverage, which will help us to provide a comprehensive source of truth for programming and ratings estimates.” Spotify and Oracle are teaming to help automotive marketers target potential car buyers more efficiently. Spotify will integrate with Oracle Data Cloud to allow marketers to build custom audiences for car buyers for every stage of the buying cycle and across every car segment. Spotify is leaning into its natural relationship with cars, since users stream music while commuting and create road-trip playlists. The company says analysis from Oracle Data Cloud, including data from Polk Measurement at HIS Markit, found that Spotify users bought cars at a rat 26% higher than the national average in 2018. STREAMING SERVICES Comcast’s management team steered clear of offering specifics on the company’s impending streaming service, but they mused on the general market during their Q1 earnings call last week. “Video over the internet is more friend than foe,” CEO Brian Roberts said. “We wish every bit was our bit but as people consume more bits… that’s in the sweet spot of where this company is going to grow.” Added NCU CEO Steve Burke, “We actually think it’s very, very early innings and in some ways reminiscent of cable in the ‘70s or ‘80s. We think there will be a lot of entrants and a lot of companies will try to enter with their own unique strengths, leveraging their own unique assets.” AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson said he was impressed by Disney’s well-received unveiling of its upcoming Disney+ streaming service. “I think what it did was give the market an appreciation that this is a viable direct to consumer product that will have good appeal for a broad number of customers, not just in the U.S.. but around the world,” said Stephenson during the company’s first quarter earnings call. “We’re very optimistic and the Disney announcement gave us nothing but more optimism in terms of what we think we’ll be able to bring to market.” Stephenson said the company expects to offer details of its upcoming service at a WarnerMedia day in September or October. Viacom networks BET, CMT, Comedy Central, MTV, Nickelodeon, Nick Jr.,Paramount Network, TV Land and VH1 will launch Tuesday, April 30 as part of fuboTV’s base “fubo” package of 85-plus channels. An expanded suite of Viacom channels will also be available in other fuboTV packages and add-ons. Streaming documentary service MagellanTV launched with 2,000-plus factual titles curated in sections including history, biography, space and crime and mystery. WALL STREET REPORTS Amazon’s 1Q19 results beat Wall Street estimates, with $3.6 billion in net income marking a quarterly record. Sales increased 17%, with the AWS cloud division revenue up 41%. Facebook reported healthy first quarter results, with revenue rising 26% to $15.077 billion, and 50 million more monthly users. The company also said the Federal Trade Commission investigation into its data use practices will cost it up to $5 billion in legal fees. “The matter remains unresolved, and there can be no assurance as to the timing or the terms of any final outcome,” Facebook said. GAMING In a move to connect dots among its film and TV programming and the gaming universe, Universal Games and Digital Platforms, in collaboration with Endless Entertainment, launched Series: Your Story Universe, a mobile game and platform through which players engage with original content inspired by NBCU’s portfolio of properties. Vanderpump Rules, Saved by the Bell, Law & Order, The Breakfast Club,Bridesmaids, Sixteen Candles and Xena: Warrior Princess are among the titles being mined. Series also will launch original stories and characters, beginning with Legacy & Love, which centers on a rags-to-riches tale. Game is free to download on the App Store and Google Play, with in-app purchases. Cox Cable began testing a new Elite Gamer Service, aimed at speeding up connections between gamers and games, in Arizona this week. The service “automatically finds a faster path for your PC game data, reducing the lag, ping spikes, and jitter that stand in the way of winning,” said the service’s web site, also noting that users will experience up to 34% less lag, 55% fewer ping spikes, and 45% less jitter than regular Cox internet users. Nolan North (Deadpool) and Troy Baker (The Last of Us) are exclusively joining Rooster Teeth’s Let’s Play family of gaming channels with their channel, Retro Replay. The pair will also appear as special guests at RTX, Rooster Teeth’s annual celebration of gaming, animation and comedy, taking place July 5-7 in Austin, Texas. The newly launched State Administration of Press and Publication in China is introducing new regulations for videogames. SAPP is introducing changes before May including establishing an online game ethics committee to review content and imposing a limit on the number of games approved annually. |
