The National Library of Medicine (NLM) PubMed Central Website (PMC) Has a Fresh Look: First Step in Ongoing Modernization Complete
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce an update to the user interface of its PubMed Central (PMC) digital archive—a free full-text archive of biomedical and life sciences journal articles. PMC’s fresh look and feel is the first step in an ongoing effort to modernize PMC, create a more accessible user experience across NLM literature databases, and enhance the long-term stability of the PMC infrastructure.

The update, informed by user feedback, includes a reorganized homepage, easy-to-navigate help documentation, and streamlined article display. You will notice a similar look and feel between features in PMC and PubMed, NLM’s biomedical literature citation database. Article pages in the new design link to a new section in the PMC User Guide that shows how to access features in the new article page layout.

New imagery available online includes the remains of ancient archaeology such as a Neolithic long barrow near Broughton, Hampshire, as well as remains of Iron Age forts such as Pilsdon Pen in Dorset and medieval villages such as Old Sulby in Northamptonshire; Second World War anti-invasion measures such as anti-aircraft obstructions (ditches and earthworks) at Hampton Court Palace in 1941, and images from the same year of RAF Kenley showing camouflaged runways; and more.

Byzantine Coins Princeton University Library Acquires the Chris Theodotou Collection of Byzantine Coins
Princeton University Library’s Numismatic Collection nearly tripled its Byzantine coin collection when it acquired 11,256 Byzantine coins from the estate of Dr. Chris B. Theodotou on March 8. The acquisition adds to the 5,280 Byzantine coins of the Peter Donald collection, acquired in 2016. Both collections were acquired with support from the Friends of Princeton University Library and the Seeger Hellenic Fund, and, together with previous holdings, Princeton now has the largest Byzantine coin collection in the world.

The coins, which are primarily issues of the Byzantine Empire between C.E. 500 and 1453, were collected by Theodotou between 1979 and 1987. According to Curator of Numismatics Alan Stahl, Theodotou was both a friend and collecting rival of Donald.
