Hey, Sumo-ling!

Research shows that 80% of people ditch their New Year’s resolutions by February. ("When I said 'no coffee,' I really meant no Starbucks... on weekends... after 4 p.m.")

If you’re in the small but mighty 20%, we tip our hats to you. But for the rest of us who need some extra motivation, fear not.

What's up, y'all? Okay, let me be real with you. I'm not a productivity guru. But I have tried a bunch of things and came up with one process that seems to work.

It's called the AAA framework (ask, align, adjust).

Here’s how it looks:

1.) ASK clarifying questions:

  • Which action, once completed, will make everything else easier OR irrelevant?
  • Which will make me most proud or excited when done? How could I make this EASY?
  • Where can I "test then invest?" Design a small test and double down only if it works.

2.) ALIGN desired outcomes with controllable inputs.

  • Define progress and success. What are the controllable inputs or KPIs? How will success be measured?
  • Do a failure premortem. Imagine it’s the end of the year and the project failed. Where specifically did it go wrong? Now, what can I put in place to prevent that?
  • Leverage accountability. Share the plan with a friend.

3.) ADJUST based on real-world feedback.

  • Time to check projections vs. reality. For example, if I planned for 100 new users in three months, but only got 10, it’s time for a new user acquisition strategy.
  • These are dead simple, but so overlooked: What is working? How can I do more of it? What is not working? How can I stop?

Take it month to month

I also like to have a monthly game plan. A month is long enough to ignite momentum, yet short enough to make adjustments. Here’s a free template that I use.
