Call to Action: Write Your Best Sales Resume Yet Posted: 29 Jun 2016 02:00 AM PDT So you want to write a winning sales resume that gets you an interview. Well, you’ll have to prove your skills by selling yourself first. A sales resume should, well, sell you to an employer. Does yours do that? Your resume should tell your readers how you’ll interact with clients once you’re hired. If your resume demonstrates that you can sell ice in the arctic, then your readers will want your skills to promote their own products and services. With that in mind, here are six things to think about as you apply your sales tactics to your job search. What’s your style? Before you draft and edit your document, ask yourself a few questions. Different sales tactics work for different reps. So which tactics work for you? List a few of the strengths you want employers to see in your sales resume. Keep these traits in mind as you start to write.Anticipate questions and answer them in your sales resumePut yourself in your reviewer’s shoes, and ask yourself the toughest questions you can imagine. Below are a few examples. “Why should I trust someone so young and inexperienced?” “Why should I hire someone with a limited sales record for our type of product?” “What makes you think you can compete with the excellent candidates we’ve seen so far?” Use your resume to answer these questions before they’re asked.Include travel experienceTraveling is difficult, but is usually a huge part of a sales job. Be sure that your sales resume highlights the amount of travel you’ve done. Better yet, address the accomplishments you made while traveling. Let your readers know that you can work well under pressure and literally out of your comfort zone.Use numbersGreat salespeople combine natural talent with training and experience. Their skills are based on both science and art. Use both to your advantage. As you promote yourself, use hard numbers to back up your claims. How much do you typically sell in a quarter? Have you set any records? By how much did you improve your previous employer’s ROI? Explain your accomplishments exactly (such as, how many times and by how much). Limit the frills and buzzwords and let your track record speak for itself.Don’t cut corners or skip detailsSalespeople should never be sloppy or half-invested. Do you sell ice cream by saying that it’s “meh, just okay”? No. Your sales resume shouldn’t convey the same message. Careful editing, customizing, and proofreading demonstrate that you are dedicated to doing your best.Use every resource availableGreat sales people are fearless and direct, and they certainly aren’t afraid of new approaches to old problems. So use every channel available to you. Don’t just stop with your sales resume; create a website, a blog, a multimedia “resume experience,” a social media strategy, and anything else that might help you sell yourself.
