Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow is enjoying one heck of a winning streak.

Wednesday marked the 18th consecutive day that The Rachel Maddow Show has been in the top spot for total viewers. In fact, the MSNBC host's eponymous show was the most-watched in both total viewers and the demo on Wednesday, with nearly 3.9 million total viewers and 622,000 in the key demographic of viewers age 25–54.

Her network scored this week as well, winning total viewers in prime time with 3.07 million, and 474,000 in the demo. Fox was second, with 2.84 million total viewers, and 435,000 in the demo. CNN’s prime time lineup had the fewest total viewers, 2.16 million, but dominated in the demo with 541,000.

MSNBC also had the most overall total day viewers, with 1.83 million total, and 273,000 in the demo. Fox was second, with 1.59 million total viewers, and 241,000 in the demo. CNN was close behind in total viewers, with 1.51 million, and again won in the demo, with 387,000.

Maddow's sunrise colleagues Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski dominated the ratings as well, with their show Morning Joe winning the early morning with nearly 1.4 million total viewers and the most in the demo.

MEDIA LOSER:
Tucker Carlson

Tucker Carlson has a prime time television show, makes millions of dollars a year, and has become a big enough celebrity in conservative circles that he's viewed as a potential future presidential contender.

But the Fox News host is unable to be content with his success, and spent a lot of energy dredging up old feuds with former colleagues and launching nonsensical attacks against journalists

Case in point: Carlson spent a segment on his Thursday night show mocking Shepard Smith, who left Fox News last year and then was hired to anchor his own show on CNBC.

“Tonight, we want to bring you the story of a genuine investigative journalist,” said Carlson, with maximum snark, as he introduced a clip of Smith reporting about a viral video from a Florida grocery store where virtually none of the employees or customers were wearing masks.

The coronavirus pandemic is still a very real threat, with Americans dying every day. People's recalcitrance to follow precautionary measures isnewsworthy, despite Carlson's whinging to the contrary.

Par for the course, though -- Carlson spent part of Wednesday's show attacking journalists as only in the profession for the "power." Actual journalists had a different view.

The A-Block

Out of committees but not out of the spotlight

On Thursday, the House voted to strip Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) of her committee assignments, with 11 Republicans joining a unanimous Democratic caucus in supporting the measure.

Greene's colleagues were unmoved by her non-apology statement, but hey -- at least she admitted that the 9/11 terrorist attacks were real. CNN's Jake Tapper was similarly unpersuaded by Greene's attempt to retcon her own comments. And like most trending stories, Twitter had a field day.

She might be out of her committees but she won't yield the spotlight so easily. Greene mocked Congress as "morons" for "giving someone like me more free time," and delivered a bonkers press conference to an eager media audience on Friday. Not to be overshadowed, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) hopped on Fox News to offer a truly bizarre description of that press conference.

Greene even sent out a conspiracy-laden fundraising email that hit inboxes while the House was voting.

Meanwhile, former Rep. Steve King (R-IA) whined that it was unfair that House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) cut him loose for his white supremacist remarks but defended Greene.

Elections have consequences

Vice President Kamala Harris used her constitutionally-granted tiebreaking power for the first time this week, casting her vote to clear the path for President Joe Biden's Covid relief bill and allow it to be debated and passed with a simple majority vote.

In a speech Friday, Biden made it clear that while he was willing to negotiate with Republicans on the Covid bill, he was willing to plow ahead without them if necessary. "I’m going to act, and I’m going to act fast," he said.

Paralyzed

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) fought back tears as she offered emotional testimony from the House floor on Wednesday night, describing how she felt “paralyzed” after receiving death threats targeting both her and her family and her shock watching the Capitol riot unfold on January 6.

Dominion defamed

Dominion Voting Systems’ legal counsel blasted letters to a number of pro-Trump public figures and social media sites on Thursday, demanding they preserve evidence that could lead to possible litigation for defamation, including Fox News, Newsmax TV, One America News (OAN), former President Trump, Jeanine PirroMaria BartiromoLou DobbsSean HannityDan Bongino, and MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell.

Good sport

An NFL record of nine Super Bowl appearances and six titles have understandably earned Tom Brady and army of haters, but that didn’t deter the quarterback from playing along on Thursday’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

With Brady’s 10th Super Bowl game coming up on Sunday —  and in an effort to ensure his habit of breaking records doesn’t get to his head — Jimmy Kimmel invited the all star back to the show for another edition of a fan favorite: Mean Tweets.

Brady started off by displaying some good sportsmanship, agreeing with one Twitter user that he really does look like the kind of guy who doesn’t know how to use a wrench.

Watch and enjoy the whole clip -- including the mean tweet that crossed the line -- here.
