Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Martha Raddatz

ABC’s Martha Raddatz put Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas  through a tough round of questions on why President Joe Biden's administration didn’t stop the migrant situation at the U.S. southern border from escalating.

Mayorkas spoke to Raddatz on This Week in order to emphasize the administration’s message telling immigrants “do not come” to the border. While Raddatz acknowledged the messaging effort, she brought up a statement Mayorkas made last week where he said the U.S. might be about to face the biggest migrant surge it has seen in 20 years.

“Why were you not prepared for this?” Raddatz asked.

She continued to press him, asking repeated questions about how the border crisis developed, what their plans were for addressing it, and the Biden administration's lack of transparency at Border Patrol centers.

The situation at the border is very serious, and highlights the difficulty of addressing this complex issue. Raddatz asked solid, relevant questions holding the DHS Secretary accountable.

MEDIA LOSER:
Harris Faulkner

Harris Faulkner's Monday morning interview with former President Donald Trump got off to a rough start, ended awkwardly, and hit some speed bumps in the middle. Let's recap.

At the beginning of the interview, Faulkner interrupted with what she said was breaking news: DHS Secretary Mayorkas, who has faced heavy criticism from Trump, had just resigned.

Trump was pleased: “I’m not surprised. Good. That’s a big victory for our country.”

Seconds later, after listening to her producers in her earpiece, Faulkner issued an update: “Forgive me, that has not happened. And I apologize.”

There was also the moment where Trump, once again, pushed his nonsense that the election was stolen from him, and, once again, a Fox News host did not challenge him on that.

The segment wrapped on an awkward note when Faulkner asked Trump why he was not following the usual ex-presidential tradition of avoiding criticizing their successors. “Well, you called me. I didn’t call you in all fairness,” Trump responded.

The A-Block

17-Minute Clash

MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan and Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX) had a spicy Twitter exchange Friday about the border crisis, and they turned up the heat when Crenshaw went on Hasan’s show Sunday. For nearly 17 minutes. But, hey, at least it ended cordially.

Hasan and Crenshaw’s Twitter battle covered several immigration-related topics, including the child separation policy of former President Donald Trump‘s administration and the recent surge of unaccompanied minors at the border.

Insults were tossed around — the Congressman called Hasan a “hack” at one point — but wrapped up with an agreement to take their debate to the television.

Which they did. And WHOA did it get fiery.

But it was substantively worthwhile, too.

John Oliver opened Sunday’s Last Week Tonight by addressing the shootings in Atlanta last week, which killed eight people, six of whom were Asian women — specifically calling out Meghan McCain’s reaction to the attack.

Oliver highlighted Trump's penchant for referring to the Covid-19 pandemic as the "China virus," and then played a clip from a March 2020 episode of The View, in which McCain shrugged off the objections to Trump's words as "P.C. labeling" and said she didn't have a problem with it.

Oliver then tore into McCain and said her "Stop Asian Hate" tweet after the shootings -- with three broken heart emojis -- just didn't cut it.
