Good morning. Temperatures will range from the low 30s to low 40s from north to south with partly sunny skies throughout the state. Here's what we're talking about in Maine today.

Why tribal chiefs are worried about Maine’s response to a new sovereignty push

  • Gov. Janet Mills made repairing state relations with the tribes one of her priorities after taking office. But leaders of Maine's four federally recognized tribes say how the Democrat reacts to the Maine Indian Claims Task Force's recommendations will show how much she supports them.
These ‘radical educators’ want to dismantle racial bias in Maine schools
  • Maine teachers are taking a significant step toward addressing what they’ve identified as a system of racial bias embedded in their classrooms.

Roughly 50 teachers, school social workers, librarians and other educators in the inaugural Maine Collective of Radical Educators, or MaineCORE, have teamed up to promote equity, anti-discrimination and restorative justice.

Snow camels and kangaroos lived on the streets of Bangor one winter a century ago

  • Belgian-born artist Valentin Henneman for several winters in the early 1920s crafted elaborate, life-size, highly realistic snow sculptures on the front lawn of his house, which stood about where Bar Harbor Bank & Trust on Main Street now is, across the street from the Bangor House.
This retiring judge once brought roosters into the courtroom in a case involving Janet Mills
  • Maine's longest-serving judge is stepping down after 41 years, 1 month and 25 days on the bench.
Judge orders Belfast activists to stop filing lawsuits to stall fish farm project

  • A Belfast judge told opponents of a proposed land-based fish farm to stop filing lawsuits aimed at stalling the project, invoking a law that is more commonly used to protect activists than corporations.

Justice Robert Murray has not made any decisions on the ownership of a contested piece of the intertidal zone that’s crucial for the $500 million Nordic Aquafarms project to proceed, but proponents of the development say the recent court ruling moves them a step closer to their goal.

Maine high court rules in favor of MDI auto museum that’s been trying to sue its own trustees
  • The Seal Cove Auto Museum in Tremont sued John Sanford and John Higgins in 2016, alleging that the two men, who serve as trustees of the Richard C. Paine Jr., Automobile Collection Charitable Trust, had paid themselves excessive fees and used their positions as trustees to pay themselves additional fees for other services they rendered to the trust.
Do this: Romantic ice skating adventures for a fun winter date

  • Doing something active outside can be an excellent way to spend quality time with someone and get to know them better. And more specifically, ice skating is an activity that has a unique carefree quality to it — maybe because there’s often no real objective. The only goal is to glide and twirl and have fun.

So as Valentine’s Day approaches and you’re looking for something to do with a loved one — or a potential loved one — consider seeking out an ice rink or frozen pond.
