1 Track works on the Southern Runway (Südbahn)
Bauarbeiten Südbahn

Engineering work and track closures around Semmering lead to rerouting of freight convoys.

Due to engineering work, the Southern Runway (Südbahn) will be closed between Payerbach/Reichenau and Semmering stations from March 30 to April 21 st, 2016.
Shuttle trains and wagonload consignments have been included in the rerouting plan, and will be diverted accordingly.
Special trains will be planned and run following verification of the capacity needed and associated train path availability.
Please allow for any delays arising for this in your own planning and deployment arrangements. Please ask your contacts directly for more details.

2 Cool Express
Cool Express

Rail Cargo Operator delivers fresh fruit and vegetables with a seamless cold chain from the port of Koper to Rotterdam.

In course of the EU project „Fresh Fruit Corridor“ (FFC), Rail Cargo Operator - Austria GmbH (RCO-AT) is in charge of the first intermodal test train for transporting fresh fruit and vegetables, enabling an seamless cold chain transportation from the port of Koper to Rotterdam. This has been the first test trip that crosses wide parts of Europe temperature-controlled by rail from the South to the North.

The perishable goods – oranges, clementines and potatoes – have been transported so far by sea  from Israel to the North European ports. Through the use of the rail freight connection via the port of Koper, the transportation time has been shortened by seven days in the test run.

With the successful handling of the first „Cool Express“, RCO-AT was able to convince the Israeli customer with a high-quality performance. The European route share from Koper to Rotterdam by rail has been completed safely within 40 hours.

In the next months, the project FFC will be further expanded with new innovative connections.

3 Sugar beets ride the rails
Rekordjahr für Zuckerrübentransport

Successful conclusion to Hungarian sugar beet harvest thanks to Rail Cargo Hungaria

Every September, the sugar beet crop is ripe and ready for harvest. This means also a high season for the logistics and transport industry, since tonnes of beets need to be transported to sugar refineries for processing. By the end of the harvest in early January, Rail Cargo Hungaria had carried 600,000 tonnes of beets to the Magyar Cukor Zrt. sugar refinery. The beets are loaded onto wagons at 48 collection points and stations across Hungary; the wagons are then assembled into block trains at rail hubs before setting off for the refinery in Kaposvár. This season, a total of 12,954 wagonloads were moved. If all those beet-laden wagons were laid end-to-end, they would form a train 194 kilometres long - as far as a straight line from Sopron to Budapest.

4 New connections
Neue Verbindungen

Rail Cargo Operator adds new Ruhr Valley-Romania route, expanding intermodal services in unaccompanied combined transport.

Railport Arad, a terminal on the Romanian-Hungarian border, is one of South-Eastern Europe's principal logistics centres, and in a major hub for freight flows to and from that part of the continent. Since January 2016, the Rail Cargo Group has been expanding its rail service offering to Romania and neighbouring countries. The latest connection links Romania's economic centres with Germany's Ruhr Valley, thus offering an attractive alternative to road haulage. Block trains now run from Duisburg/Rheinhausen to Railport Arad and back three times a week. The big benefit is that the whole journey is performed using in-house traction, all the way from Germany to Romania, via Austria and Hungary. Overall transit time is therefore excellent, and the container transport services are fast, efficient and of high-quality.
