That is why so many people live such an unreal life. They take the images outside of them for reality and never allow the world within to assert itself." H. Hesse Raúl Campos is a bourgeoning Mexican artist in the classical realist movement. Primarily known for his dramatic figure paintings depicting human struggle he utilizes a limited palette to help emphasize the timelessness of the shared human experience by mood and color. His figure paintings are often nuanced with symbols or other iconic motifs associated with the inner life - assisting in the telling of a story. At the impressionable age of fifteen Raúl Campos entered the studio of the gifted Mexican realist Roman Miranda and began an apprenticeship that lasted for the next four years. In Miranda's studio he learned that in order to be successful one had to be truly dedicated to ones craft and to tirelessly work hard at it. In 2011 he enrolled at the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende but soon realized that the curriculum being offered was not aligned with his growing interest in the classical arts. Subsequently he left school and for the next few years painted on his own while continuing to seek further enrichment. Eventually he discovered The Angel Academy of Art in Florence, Italy and was admitted to their full time program. Inspired by the beauty of Florence and the courses offered he mastered the two principal components fundamental to the development of the creative process: drawing from the human figure and copying the masters. He also developed a better understanding of how to use materials properly. After completing the three year program at The Angel Academy of Art in 2019 he decided to extend his stay in Europe and enrolled at The Nerdrum School in Norway, a classical atelier. At the Nerdrum School students are taught to refine their skills while navigating their creativity through the lens of philosophical insight and the senses. The school frowns upon aspects of the modern world that remove, distract or agitate the mind heart and soul from connecting with the beauty of nature, humanity and the spiritual life? Campos' experiences in Norway deepened his appreciation for music, classical philosophy and poetry? all of which was pivotal in the further development of his artistry. In Norway he finally had the freedom to test his skill and push the boundaries of paint in ways that he had not experienced before. He also learned to build a narrative - to tell a story in a beautiful and meaningful way in order to raise the human soul. Raúl Campos currently lives, paints and teaches in Mexico. He is inspired by the complexity of modern life, humanity and the rich cultural heritage of his birth home. Alison Collins FASO Loves Derek Harrison’s oil paintings!
