Today

Good morning! Today is Wednesday August 23, 2017.
Here is a sampler of some of the latest investigative news from around the country and across the world.

Stormfront Nazis Condemn Charlottesville Marchers
Wired
Post-Charlottesville, posters on the neo-Nazi Stormfront website condemned the Unite the Right rally as counterproductive to their shared goals of securing a future for the white race. They said screaming openly about Jews gave other neo-Nazis a bad name and viewed the death of 32-year-old Heather Heyer almost exclusively as bad PR.

Police Tasers Can Be as Deadly as Guns
Reuters
Stun guns are supposed to be a non-lethal alternative to handguns, but people are still dying after being tased by police. Taser International insists that its weapons are almost never to blame when someone dies after being stunned, but a new Reuters investigation suggests otherwise. While some victims have underlying heart issues, in over 150 cases the taser was listed on autopsies as the cause of death or as a contributing factor.

Medicaid Made $72 Million in Bad Payments in Kentucky
Washington Free Beacon
The state of Kentucky potentially made Medicaid payments to almost 70,000 ineligible people according to the Health and Human Services Inspector General. The amount of money the state spent on each ineligible patient could have been over $1000. The IG audit blamed human and system errors related to Obamacare implementation and the state agreed to fix the problems.

North Korea Not Far From Ability To Nuke U.S.
New York Times
North Korea is close to being able to launch a nuclear attack against the United States, the New York Times report. Although the nation faces several technical challenges, they seem solvable in the near-term.

Here's a rundown of the issues the Times explores in some depth:

  • Problem: A vehicle that can survive re-entry

Solution Status: A crude version by next year, if not already.

  • Problem: Make a bomb that can fit in a missile

Solution Status: Probably already completed.

  • Problem: Improve accuracy to hit intended target

Solution Status: Not perfect, but close enough.

  • Problem: Make a more powerful bomb

Solution Status: In the works. Arsenal probably includes Hiroshima-strength bombs, not hydrogen bombs which are 1,000 times stronger.

  • Problem: Get past United States defenses

Solution Status: Nobody knows for sure as it depends as much on U.S. ingenuity.

Millions Wasted Bringing E-Payments to Afghanistan
Motherboard
After ten years and $160 million dollars, Afghanistan uses e-payments for less than one percent of its customs transactions. Turns out it is a lot cheaper to take cash bribes than go through the monitoring and reporting headaches associated with the electronic system. The company tasked with setting up the failed system still gets to keep tens of millions of dollars for trying.

Dark Web Drug Dealers Using Trump Brand
Daily Beast
A host of black-market dealers are using the brand, name and likeness of the 45th president to upsell their shipments of ecstasy, cocaine, and ketamine. Several vendors list store as "Trump Towers," where they sell "presidential" quality substances.
