Today

Good morning! Today is Thursday August 10, 2017.
Here is a sampler of some of the latest investigative news from around the country and across the world.

Contraband Cellphones Used to Kill From Prison
Daily Caller
They're smuggled into prison in inmates' rectums, hollowed-out Bibles, or footballs thrown over the fence. Contraband cellphones are quickly becoming pervasive in America's prison system, allowing jailed gang-bangers to continue calling the shots on the outside. Regulators are catching on, but slowly: A growing list of victims proves prisons don't always protect society at large.

How Russian Casino Hacker Hits Slot Machines for Millions
Wired
Meet Alex, a Russian mathemetician who built a multimillion-dollar business on reverse engineering the algorithms that govern slot machine games. His minions roam casinos from Poland to Macau to Peru to record vulnerable slots in action, then transmit the footage to his office in St. Petersburg. There, the video is analyzed to determine when the games' odds will briefly tilt against the house. And when that happens: bingo.

Faux Cops Fighting Crime: What Could Go Wrong?
Atavist Magazine
They were partners in fighting crime. The only problem: Neither was a police officer. This is a buddy cop story that careened off the rails of a bizarre, untenable track when one friend turned on the other.

Bankrupt Puerto Rico Paid Connected Firms Millions
Daily Caller
Bankrupt Puerto Rico has awarded nearly $11 million in consulting contracts to various businesses, including marketing, lobbying and public relations firms, some with ties to government officials. The contracts appear at odds with Puerto Rico's obligation to prioritize its payments to creditors, except to fund essential services.

L.A. School Food Guru Accused of Embezzling 'Lettuce'
Los Angeles Times
For years, David Binkle was hailed as a school-nutrition pioneer for using local produce and meats to reduce the fatty fare served in the Los Angeles school district, the nation's second-largest. But prosecutors allege he illegally funneled roughly $65,000 of the district's money into a private consulting firm he ran, then stuffed some into his own pocket.

Koch Brothers Invested in 'Wonder Woman'
Hollywood Reporter
They might be the two people most reviled by Hollywood's liberals, but the Koch brothers have been a silent investor in Warner Bros.' slate of movies for four years. Steven Mnuchin, now Treasury Secretary, brought them in as investors as part of an undisclosed $450 million deal in 2013. Mnuchin reportedly also brought in Bill Gates, from the other side of the political spectrum. So this seems a story of strictly business, not politics.

Libertarians in Latin America
The Intercept
The Atlas Network, a libertarian leadership nonprofit, has a broad and powerful network south of the U.S., working to persuade people to adopt free-market policies. It's behind ministers in the new conservative government in Argentina, senators in Bolivia, and the leaders of the Free Brazil Movement that took down Dilma Rousseff's presidency. It could be the biggest libertarian thing to hit the region since Milton Friedman.

Big Tobacco Targets Women in Indonesia
Ozy
Indonesia, the world's fourth most populous country, can lay claim to the infamous smoking baby and one of the highest adult male smoking rates in the world. Now women are the latest targets of the tobacco industry, with ads featuring cigarettes alongside attractive models and essentially saying: Light up and liberate yourself. The number of female smokers is said to have increased by 400 percent in the past five years.

The Biggest Dinosaur Ever Found
The Atlantic
News of huge fossil discoveries comes around every so often, but usually claims of finding the "biggest dinosaur ever" are based on guesses using fragments of single bones. In the case of Patagotitan mayorum, discovered in 2013 in Argentina, over 200 bones were recovered. The massive animal weighed between 52 and 86 tons and would have stood around 130 feet tall.
