We spoke with coding educator Adrienne Commeree to hear what inspired her to become an instructor and the benefits of on-site training. Read what she had to say! Q: Describe your healthcare experience. A: I started my coding career working closely with a team of trauma surgeons in Pierce County, Washington. From there, I worked for the Washington State Health Care Authority (HCA) in their Program Integrity Unit, assisting with hospital coding audits. I also served as a coding consultant to other HCA departments focused on outpatient coding and policy. Q: What inspired you to pursue a career in teaching? A: As a Medicaid auditor, I had the opportunity to attend numerous national training programs, many of which were presented by HCPro. I got to know the instructors and soon after began my career as a regulatory specialist. Q: What is the most rewarding aspect of teaching on-site education? A: It’s great working with a group of students who work together on a regular basis—the classroom is lively with group discussions. We often work through “real life” coding issues that students encounter in their facility. I love facilitating this learning experience and guiding students to reach that “aha!” moment. Q: Do you have a “philosophy”—spoken or unspoken? A: Coding is an art. While it is subjective, coders must follow the rules and stay within the lines. My job, and also my passion, is diving into the art of coding and analyzing each piece of documentation to create a masterpiece. Experience the difference custom on-site education can make for your organization. Speak to a training specialist today to bring Adrienne, or one of our other expert coding educators to your facility in January 2018. |
