A Third of FDA-Approved Drugs Go On to Have Major Safety Issues
Ars Technica
About a third of the drugs that the Food and Drug Administration deems safe and effective go on to have major safety issues years after their approval, researchers report in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The finding comes amid pressure from lawmakers and the Trump administration to hasten the agency's drug reviews.

Howard University Refused To Help Suicidal Rape Victims, Suit Claims
Buzzfeed
Howard University failed to swiftly handle sexual-assault reports, leading to at least one assailant raping on campus again, a federal lawsuit claims. The Washington D.C. school also refused to provide the help that suicidal rape victims requested, the complaint says, and let an accused rapist who was a resident assistant have access to a key to his alleged victim's dorm room.

Senator Markey Said to Rely on Conspiracy Blogs
Daily Caller
Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey uses conspiracy theory-laden blogs as sources for information on alleged Trump-Russia connections, according to a top aide in his office. "A grand jury has been empaneled up in New York," he asserted in a CNN interview - erroneously, it turned out.

What Caused the "Gooey Nightmare" at a Montana Wastewater Plant
Montana Standard
When workers opened doors at the Butte-Silver Bow wastewater treatment plant, what came out looked like something out of the "The Blob." The trouble started with a "huge grease dam," possibly bacon grease, plugging a sewer line. Once that was broken up, chunks of grease flowed to the plant, where bacteria had a feast and bloomed and foamed out of control. The plant had to shut down for six hours in early April.

Criminals Peg Digital Extortion to McDonald's Prices
Observer
Don't look over your shoulder, Hamburglar: Fatboy is gaining on you. When the new ransomware by that name calculates digital extortion to free up devices it has infected and paralyzed, it has the good manners to take its victim's cost of living into consideration. It relies on the "Big Mac Index" maintained by The Economist magazine. Presumably, because the poor deserve a break today.
