Today

Good morning! Today is Thursday June 08, 2017.
Here is a sampler of some of the latest investigative news from around the country and across the world.

How Trump Moved Kids-Cancer Money To His Business
Forbes
Eric Trump says holding charity events for St. Jude's Children's Hospital at one of his family's golf courses is a great deal: no rental expenses for a host space, so more money for the kids. But the paperwork shows otherwise. The Trump Organization got paid for the resort's use, part of more than $1.2 million that has no documented recipients past the organization. The Trumps are also funneling donation money to other affiliated groups.

China's Operation Australia: Payments, Power and Politicians
The Age of Melbourne
Australia's major political parties have accepted millions of dollars in donations from two key Chinese businessmen, and its intelligence service is investigating whether Australian politics have been compromised. A central figure is Sheri Yan, the jailed socialite wife of a leading Australian sinologist. Before her arrest in New York by the FBI for bribery, she was fixer and lobbyist able to open doors in both Beijing and Canberra.

Leaked Intel Documents Chronicle Russian Meddling in Macedonia
Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project
Leaked documents say Russian spies and diplomats have been involved in a nearly decade-long effort to spread propaganda and provoke discord in Macedonia as part of a region-wide endeavor to stop Balkan countries from joining NATO. The documents - a collection of reports by Macedonian counterintelligence - also describe efforts by Serbian intelligence to support anti-Western and pro-Russian nationalists in Macedonia.

Russia's 'Electronic Bomb': How Fake News Lives On
Digital Forensic Research Lab
A case study in long-lived fake news: This April a Russian broadcast said a Russian attack aircraft in 2014 had managed to jam and disable an American Aegis-class frigate. Within days the report had gone global, reported with varying degrees of skepticism by British tabloids and Fox News. Problem is, the story traces back to a parody "social media post" from a sailor who never was, and had even been debunked by Russian media in 2014.

Faking 'Wokeness': Advertisers Target Millennial Liberals
Guardian
Your toilet paper will help save the planet! Increasingly big companies are gesturing at liberal values through their ads because their coveted demographic is increasingly clustered in the bluest American cities. If television is "woke" politically with "The Handmaid's Tale," ads are woker. But as Pepsi's Kendall Jenner spot showed, appropriating Black Lives Matter to sell sugary fizz, the message doesn't always ring true.
