Good morning! Today is Thursday August 03, 2017.
Here is a sampler of some of the latest investigative news from around the country and across the world.

Mothers Who Rape Their Sons
news.com.au
"She preyed on the fact I was coming into puberty and made me feel important and special," says one victim of a type of sexual abuse that gets almost no attention: mothers who rape their sons. University of Canberra researcher Lucetta Thomas is shedding light on the problem, which commonly involves both mental and physical coercion. Ninety-four men abused by their mothers filled out online surveys, and of that group, Thomas then interviewed 23 at length. This article follows up with some of the victims.

Al Gore's House Still Hogs Energy
National Center for Public Policy Research
After "An Inconvenient Truth" came out in 2006, Al Gore pledged to make his energy-guzzling manse in Nashville's posh Belle Meade enclave more environmentally friendly. But with "An Inconvenient Sequel" opening in theaters Friday, the solar panels and other green upgrades aren't making any difference, the conservative National Center for Public Policy Research concludes. The home consumes 21 times the energy the average household uses, and its usage per square foot makes it an "energy hog" at any size, the center says, drawing on electricity data from the local utility and other reporting.

Samantha Power Believed to Have Unmasked Hundreds
Washington Free Beacon
Former United Nations Ambassador Samantha Power is believed to have made "hundreds" of unmasking requests to identify individuals in classified reports related to Donald Trump and his presidential transition team, according to multiple sources. They said the behavior is unprecedented for an official in her position.

Security Risks in Pentagon Program to Recruit Immigrants
Fox News
A Pentagon investigation has uncovered potential security risks in a program used to recruit immigrants into military service in return for expedited citizenship. Military leaders, concerned about foreign infiltration as well as participants now unaccounted for, suspended new applications to the program.

Body-Cam Recording Leads Baltimore to Drop Dozens of Cases
New York Times
Body cameras issued to Baltimore police after the 2015 death in custody of Freddie Gray suggest major problems still persist within the force. State attorneys are dismissing dozens of cases over a video that appears to show a cop planting evidence while two other officers look on. Over 100 criminal cases that would have relied on testimony from those three officers are now under review.

Would You Buy an Ethics Alibi From This Lawmaker?
Daily Beast
It's often said that the scandal in Washington is not what's illegal but what's legal. The Daily Beast offers a case in point: Rep. Roger Williams, Texas Republican and successful car dealer. He was cleared by the House Ethics Committee because it determined he did not act with his own bottom-line in mind when he shielded dealerships from stronger safety rules. Rather, the panel reasoned, he merely inserted the legislative language in question at the behest of an industry lobbyist. So, everything kosher.

North Korea's Lights Show Economy Improving
Fox News
Nighttime satellite images captured over the Korean peninsula have long been quite revealing: bright lights in the economically vibrant South juxtaposed with near darkness in the oppressed Hermit Kindom. Now they tell a somewhat different story. Pyongyang's lights are getting brighter, a sign that sanctions are not only failing to deter North Korea from building up its nuclear arsenal, but that the country's economy is actually improving.

When Rural America Burned
Longreads
In late 2012 and early 2013, the No. 1 place where people were listening for crime data on their phones was not New York or Los Angeles but Accomack County, Va. Besieged by a torrent of inexplicable arsons, the place became a national obsession. Why? asks Monica Hesse. Because, as with other famous crimes, Accomack County told a story about the country at the moment -- in this case the story of forgotten rural America, which was figuratively on fire too. An excerpt from "American Fire: Love, Arson, and Life in a Vanishing Land."
