Max Gotzl is double 2020 Czech National Champion Posted: 22 Sep 2020 06:46 AM PDT The 3rd and 4th round of 2020 1/8 Czech Nationals took a place last weekend at the home track of Max Gotzl in Horni Jeleni. The nice weather forecast promised a good racing weekend, which it was. On the 3rd round on Saturday Gotzl was able to set the overall TQ with Ebuggy straight after Q1 and Q2, Ales Bidovsky lined up 2nd and Mirek Koutek 3rd on the A main grid. With Nitro Martin Bayer took Q1, but Max managed to win Q2 and Q3 to take the overall TQ in Nitro as well. In the finals Xray driver Gotzl was able to win all three A mains in Ebuggy with at least one lap gap over 2nd placed Ales and Martin Milowsky who took the last step on the podium overall. In Nitro buggy Gotzl managed to set the fastest time in semis to take the pole position for the main final, just few seconds back was Martin who lined up second and Jiri Mara took the third starting spot. Max resisted Martin for the whole first lap, but unfortunately on the second lap his engine stopped, probably because of the rocks on the track. After that incident the young Xray driver had a really big gap over second place and was able to finish the 30 minute main on the first place to take the second overall win! Martin managed to climb his way back to the 2nd place in the end and Jiri Mara finished 3rd. The 4th round of the series on Sunday again saw Max Gotzl TQ all three qualifiers with Ebuggy to take the pole for triple A main. Ales was again on the second place and Mirek third. As there were less nitro drivers then on Saturday, it was decided not to have Semis and go straight into the main final, so they ran 4 qualifiers. Again Max was able to TQ the first three to secure pole position for the main in front of Martin Bayer in 2nd and Ales Bidovsky in 3rd. The Ebuggy saw the pole man win A1 and A2 to secure the win straight away after some nice fights with Ales, who finished overall 2nd and Martin Milowsky took the 3rd spot again. On the second lap of the main final in nitro Max made a mistake which put Martin in the lead, and unfortunately Gotzl made some more mistakes of his own, but still was trying to chase Martin as they ran this main for 45 minutes. Unfortunately again Martin had an issue, when in the middle of the race as his throttle servo broke. So Max took over the lead and finished on the first place with huge gap over 2nd Tomas Kapicka and 3rd Ales Bidovsky. As this was the last two round of the series, they also had the whole season prize-giving ceremony. Max Gotzl became the Czech National Champion 2020 in both classes, for the second time in a row. He managed to get full points in both, Nitro and Ebuggy. In Ebuggy Ales Bidovsky became the vice-champion and Martin Milowsky finished 3rd. In Nitro Jiri Mara is the vice-champion and Martin Bayer finished 3rd overall. Awesomatix A12 1/12th scale chassis Posted: 22 Sep 2020 02:57 AM PDT Having previously shown you prototype photos of Awesomatix’ radical new A12 1/12th scale chassis, today the Russian company have released final details & photos of their soon to be available car. The first thing you notice about the A12 is simply how low it sits. A low centre of gravity is a critical element in racing performance for any class, and this is further exemplified by the A12 pan car on an entirely new level. Much like the Awesomatix A800MMX touring car, the A12 far surpasses all existing 12th scales by providing a much lower centre of gravity. The Awesomatix A12 features a completely new design compared to any previous 12th scale car on the market. It does not have a standard lower deck / chassis and lower pod plate, but rather is composed of two parts that work in tandem and are connected with ball joints. The outer frame of these two suspension components contributes to the spring action of the car as it functions like a large spring. The inner frame contains the front end, servo, receiver, esc and battery. A hydraulic damper is built between these two parts of the frame, providing easily adjustable dampening and rear axle movement. The end result is a suspension and pivot movement that is similar to conventional 12th scale cars but has proven to be far more durable and tweak free. Additionally, the alloy side braces on the outer spring frame offer several possibilities to play with rate of the “rear suspension” by simply moving and adjusting a set screw. The stiffness of the chassis can be adjusted very quickly for a variety of track conditions. The A12 follows the Awesomatix tradition of innovation by using specially designed hydraulic rotary dampeners instead of traditional oil piston shocks. The A12 rear rotary damper unit is very compact in size and mounted at the lowest possible point on the chassis. Inside of the damper case are two rotary damper ‘vanes’ that work independently to ensure smooth and efficient dampening, which can be adjusted by different viscosity silicone oil. This carefully designed damper provides the required ratio between both the longitudinal and side dampening needed to excel on any track condition. This rear damper is easily removable, too, as just two screws allow for the “quick release” of the entire unit. The 7075 T6 aluminium front hubs on the A12 have created a highly adjustable front end design. This kingpin design enables the use of different viscosity oil, grease, and o-rings within the front hubs along with traditional coil-over springs to ensure optimal performance on any racing surface. Setting the front end camber is quite simple and is done by turning the kingpin post. Predetermined holes in the front carbon suspension plate line up with predrilled holes in the kingpin post which together determine camber angle. This allows camber to be changed in 0.25 degree increments, from 0.75 to 1.75 degrees. The A12’s stiff front bumper design matches the shape of the front carbon suspension plate and is cut at an angle to match the front-end shape of most commonly used body shells. Unlike most 12th scale kit bumpers, no hand fitment is required and the bumper’s stiffness helps prevent damage in the case of a crash. The design concept of the car supports an inline battery and centralised electronics placement. The servo is mounted to the front end cross plate. Multiple sizes and shapes of servos can be used, up until a maximum dimension of 35mm x 30mm x 15mm. The ESC, receiver, servo and transponder are located in front of the battery. The rear rotary dampener is positioned under the battery at the back of the inner frame. The inner frame connects to the outer frame with 2 ball joints at the front end that allow it to pivot, and small hooks on each side of the damper vane connect it to the rear pod assembly to provide the ideal dampening level. The carbon side wings offer two possibilities for both side spring placement and rear body posts position. The side spring positions offered on the car allow for variable side roll stiffness depending on the conditions. Depending on the body shell used and its mounting position, the narrow or wider holes may be more suitable to ensure no deformation of the body shell at high speeds. Another Awesomatix innovation is an ultra-lightweight spring steel-alloy composite spool axle which uses a centre nut to quickly change the spur gear. The total weight of this fully-metal spool unit is less than the most competitors’ carbon spools but with far greater total strength and torsional rigidity. The very light, solid circular aluminium rear beam provides exceptional rigidity and a tweak-free operation for the rear pod. This rear beam can be set in a short or long wheelbase position, and shims used under this beam set the desired ride height. Volker victorious as ETS gets back on track Posted: 21 Sep 2020 11:50 AM PDT The Euro Touring Series (ETS) finally got back underway last weekend, after the Coronavirus situation forced the delay to the 2020 season. The newly re-surfaced and re-configured Arena 33 circuit in Andernach, Germany was the host for the return of the famous series and attracted around 200 entries – impressive given the situation and the travel restrictions that continue to affect events in Europe. In the Modified class, Yokomo’s Ronald Volker took the first two rounds of qualifying, putting him in a strong position early on. The German driver led Q1 ahead of Awesomatix’s Lucas Urbain and Xray’s Bruno Coelho, whilst Q2 saw second and third places reversed as Urbain showed his intention to challenge the “big three” at this event. Marc Rheinard took the challenge to Ronald in Q3 to get his event back on track, the Tonisport/Awesomatix driver leading Volker and Coelho in the round. Q4 would then decide pole position between the two German rivals, but it was Urbain who took his first ever ETS round TQ to lead, leaving Rheinard in second and Alexander Hagberg having his best result in third. This left Volker on pole, ahead of Rheinard, Urbain, Coelho and Hagberg. A1 saw a battle between Volker and Rheinard, as the top two starters pulled a small gap out and left Urbain and Coelho to fight for third. Rheinard kept the pressure on Volker, but as the race entered the final third, Rheinard started to drop back a little and gave Volker a small gap which allowed him to focus on controlling the pace until the end of the run. The top four finished in grid order, with Yannic Prumper (Awesomatix) coming from ninth on the grid to take fifth. A2 once again saw Rheinard applying pressure to the pole-position started, but this time Urbain stuck with the German drivers and looked like he could challenge Rheinard. However, one minute into the race, the Frenchman’s challenge came to an end, rolling his car and dropping back through the field. From this point, it was a similar story to A1, with Rheinard keeping the pressure on Volker, but ultimately not quite being close enough to challenge for the win. Behind, Urbain’s mistake promoted Coelho and Hagberg into third and fourth respectively, the two Xray drivers finishing up around one and a half seconds behind the leading pair, with Schumacher’s Michal Orlowski making up a place to finish fifth. The win here gave Volker the overall victory at the event, backing up his victory from the previous ETS in Daun and solidifying his lead in the championship. A3 would then decide the rest of the podium and again, the cars circulated in grid order with everyone being so evenly matched on pace at the front there were little opportunities for passes. Rheinard ran out the winner, securing second overall, ahead of Urbain who would complete the overall podium. Modified A-Final results In the Pro Stock class, it was tight at the top as always with four different drivers taking each round of qualifying. Frederik Mikkelsen took Q1, ahead of fellow Danish driver Kevin Nielsen, before Q2 saw Simon Lauter then take control, beating out Alexandre Duchet for the best time. Q3 went the way of Max Machler, with Lauter in second place, whilst Q4 had Duchet with the win and Nielsen in second. Adding up the points and looking through the tie breaks, Duchet secured pole position, lining up ahead of Lauter, Mikkelsen, Machler and Nielsen. In the finals, Duchet led the way and took the wins in both A1 and A2 to secure an early overall win. Lauter had a battle with team-mate Machler in Leg 1, but ultimately held on for second place, before staying closer to Duchet in Leg 2, but still not close enough to deny the French driver the win. Lauter took the win in Leg 3 to confirm second overall, with Machler rounding out the overall podium. Pro Stock A-Final results In the Formula class, the battle at the front was between Infinity’s Jitse Miedema, who set the pace in the first and fourth rounds of qualifying, and Jacques Libar, using his own Libar Engineering prototype car, who went fastest in Q2 and Q3. Coming down to the tie break, Libar would start on pole position thanks to setting a faster time. Andreas Stiebler was the only other driver who looked close to the leading pair and would start third on the grid with his Serpent. The first final saw Libar struggling to get off the line after starting on the dirty side of the grid, immediately dropping him to the back and allowing Miedema to a comfortable lead. Behind, Dominik Reile came through to take second ahead of Stiebler. In A2, Libar had a much better start and led the field. On the third lap, Miedema hit a curb awkwardly and took himself out of the race. This meant Stiebler was promoted into second, which he would hold until the end, and David Ehrbar, who had a qualifying to forget, moved into third by the end. The final leg showdown saw Libar lead again, but an excellent pass from Miedema on the long sweeper saw the Dutch driver take the lead. Libar continued to run close in second, but wasn’t able to get close enough to challenge to take the lead back. This allowed Miedema to take the win and his second overall ETS victory, with Libar taking the runner up spot and Stiebler completing the podium. Formula A-Final results The Masters class saw domination once again from Alexander Stocker. The German driver took three of the qualifying rounds to secure pole position, and then led the first two A Finals to take a comfortable victory. Behind, Christian Driessle lined up second on the grid, but Caspar Morgen came through from fourth to take second overall, with Nathan Parker completing the podium after starting fifth. Masters A-Final results Front Wheel Drive was the biggest class of the weekend, with 50 entries. Stefan Schulz led the way in qualifying, starting on pole ahead of Kevin Sparbier and Jonas Volker. In the finals, Schulz took the win in Leg 1, before Sparbier came back to take Leg 2. The final leg showdown then went the way of Schulz to allow him to take the overall win, with Sparbier and Volker completing the podium. FWD A-Final results Finally, in the 17.5 Stock class, Thomas Bemmerl secured pole position ahead of Alexander Muller and Joachim Altenhof. In the finals, despite Muller’s best efforts, Bemmerl took A1 and A2 for the overall win. Muller had to settle for second place, with Daniel Pohlmann taking third place as Altenhof dropped to fourth. 17.5 Stock A-Final results With the series now looking to extend into early 2021, the next event is due to take place indoors in October in Muelheim Kaerlich, Germany.
