The drivers had to contend with incredibly mixed and difficult track conditions throughout the day as the UK weather is definitely in Autumn mode. Olly Jefferies dominated the Modified class as he has for most of 2017 taking a comfortable win in both legs of the finals after taking TQ. Chris Grainger was 2nd and Elliott Harper 3rd. In the super competitive 13.5 Boosted class was a tight fought affair until the end, with Schumacher team mates James Hart and Chris Gunter taking the top two spots followed by Marcus Askell. The 13.5 Blinky class was in its first year and the championship was won by Schumacher’s Gareth Hollis, with Jason Butterfield 2nd and Jimmy Maddision 3rd. Soren Boy Holst wins at Danish EP On-road finale Posted: 11 Sep 2017 08:41 AM PDT The final round of the Danish Electric On-road Championship was held in Odense over the weekend. Saturday’s practice was pretty much washed away and only a handful of drivers tried to tackle the track with prepped cars. Sunday then started off with two round of controlled practice but unfortunately the track was still moist so track activity would be limited. With this being the championship decider Mike Gosvig and Kevin Nielsen were both keen to score maximum points, as they went even into the final round, but it was veteran racer Soren Boy Holst, who only has some sort of a practice season in 2017 but already won the Glostrup round of the nationals and the Hot Race Summer Cup, who stamped his authority with his VBC Racing car by taking the pole position for the triple A-mains. His TQ also meant the oh so important extra point was taken away from the championship contenders. The opening A-main was all smooth sailing for Soren who left behind Mike and Kevin in 2nd and 3rd, the latter two separated by only 3/100th of a second. A2 was pretty much a blueprint for the man up front with Soren locking up the day’s win with a victory in the second main while Mike struggled, making way fro Kevin Nielsen and Patrick Danielsen. With the two championship contenders tie on results the stage was set for a dramatic final A-main. Søren got a great start but made a roll on a curb and had to wait eight seconds for marshalling. He dropped back and had to fight his way up to 4th place overall, were he would later end four seconds behind the leader. Up front Mike was now in the lead with Xray team mate Kevin right behind him and so the pressure was on Mike for every second of the 5-minutes final but the two stayed like that until the finish line, handing Mike the runner-up spot from Kevin in 2nd. Thanks to Soren Boy Holst for the report. |
Asia Onroad Championships Rd4 – Report Posted: 11 Sep 2017 08:10 AM PDT Round 4 of the Asia Onroad Championships were held at the GRC Raceway in South Korea. A true world-class facility greeted the drivers that gathered from all around the world to compete. In the opening Modified Touring A-main and out to the early lead was Akio Sobue with teammate Marc Rheinard following closely. In the 3rd position was E. C. Kim patiently waiting for the leaders to make a mistake and take advantage. The leaders would get by lapped traffic cleanly, Kim wouldn’t be so lucky. Akio and Marc would battle all the way until the end with only two tenths of a second separating them. E. C. Kim would finish 3rd. In A2 and with one of the cleanest starts of the day, Akio Sobue brought his A-game in this main and would take the lead with authority. Quickly building a 3-second lead over teammate Marc Rheinard, Sobue’s car was on point. He would carry this momentum all the way to victory with Rheinard finishing 2nd as E.C. Kim would again capture the 3rd position. A3 was once again the Akio and Marc show as the two teammates jumped out the lead and started to distance themselves from the field. The rest of the field followed a couple of seconds behind with Victor Wilck jumping into the 3rd position, Nicholas Lee 4th and E.C. Kim running in 5th. Traffic seemed to big issue all weekend, as the front-runners weren’t able to get by cleanly. With two laps to go, Akio Sobue bobbled and steered wide right before the front straight allowing Rheinard to take the lead. Akio attacked back with everything he had to regain the lead, maybe a bit too much spinning out Rheinard on the last turn before the finish line. He waited letting Marc finish in the 1st position. Viktor Wilck finished the race in 3rd. Overall it was Akio with the win from Marc and E.C. Kim. In Super Stock 13.5 Jan Ratheisky, all the way from Germany, TQ’ed the class and thought he would easily cruise in for the easy win. Not if Dung Uk Jang had anything say about that. For the first few minutes of the race, the two were less than a second apart with Dung Uk Jang matching every of Jan’s moves, until they hit traffic. With every car Dung had to wait to get around, Ratheisky would get away a little more. In the end, Jan would take the win with close to a 2 second lead. Naoya Morita would finish 3rd. In A2 Jan Ratheisky would once again prove his dominance in the Super Stock 13.5 Touring class and pull away to leave the battles happen behind him. Naoya Morita from Japan was having a strong showing with his Yokomo machine placing himself solidly in the 2nd position half way through the race. The 3rd position was up for grabs with In-mo Kang and Kijeong Park fighting for that spot. Separated by 3 seconds, Park would run out of time. Jan Ratheisky would take the with the only 14-lap run. Naoya Morita would capture 2nd and In-mo Kang would take 3rd. Jan Ratheisky had secured the overall win taking the top spots in the 1st and 2nd mains. Trying to make it a clean sweep for the weekend, he decided to run the third main. His chances looked good as he jumped out to the early lead at the beginning of the race. Running closely behind were Dung Uk Jang and Naoya Morita, who were not only in a battle for the 2nd and 3rd spot in this race, but in the overall results too. The two stayed together for most of the race until they hit traffic allowing Dung to widen the gap. At the end of the race, Jan Ratheisky would take the win with Dung Uk Jang 2nd and Naoya Morita 3rd and this would also be the overall result. The start of the 21.5 Touring class was rough not once, but twice. Race director Scotty Ernst had to calm down the drivers and do a third restart. This tie the start was smooth as butter and racing got under way. The whole group freight trained through the first couple of laps with Kim Baekwan leading the charge. There was no chance to relax for Kim with 2nd qualifier Ji Hoon Kim closely flowing behind with Il Kuyn Lim and Kang Il Lee two seconds back. Halfway though the main, the field started to spread out and with the clock ticking, Baekwan cruised to the win with Hoon Kim four seconds behind. Il Kuyn Lim would collect 3rd. With a cleaner start this time, A2 got underway with out any big crashes. The field stayed close together and in its positions for the first few laps. As the racers settled in, the field spread out and the top three separated themselves from the rest. The best battle was happening for the 2nd and 3rd positions with Ji Hoon Kim and Lee Yu Sung trading paint every lap. In the end Yu Sung would win that battle with Hoon Kim taking 3rd. Kim Baekwan would take the over all win. As Kim Baekwan took the win in the first two mains, he decided to sit out the third main, leaving the 2nd and 3rd podium spots yet to be decided. Once again, it was a clean start as the main got underway. With a 2nd and 3rd place finish under his belt, Ji Hoon Kim jumped out into the lead with Byoung Wook Park closely in tow challenging him for the position. With 90 seconds left in the race, Byoung would challenge for the lead on the back straight and the cars would touch, spinning out Byoung. He would quickly regain control, but would fall behind a couple of seconds. The finishing order of the this third main would be Ji Hoon Kim taking the win, Byoung Wook Park 2nd and Jeil Lee taking 3rd. Overall and behind Kim Baekwan it were Ji Hoon Kim and Il Kuyn Lim who rounded out the podium. The hotly contested Formula class is steadily growing in popularity and the drivers were definitely hungry for a podium spot. At the sound of the tone in the first main, it was TQ Jan Ratheisky who jumped out to the lead, trying to check out early. Leaving the others behind to jockey to position, Dominic Quek, Max Park and Lee Giu Jin fiercely battled for the entire race. Taking the top 3 were Ratheisky 1st, Max Park 2nd and Lee Gui Jin 3rd. At the start of the second Formula main, Jan Ratheisky looked like he was going to do a repeat performance of the opening main and quickly built up a big lead after two laps. Behind him, Yoo Jae Kuk and Max Park battled until the two tangled in the 2-minute mark with Max coming out ahead. Patiently waiting behind these two was Byung Hwan Kim, who would take over the 2nd position when Park and Jae Kuk would tangle again. When the dust had settled, Ratheisky would take the overall win, Yoo Jae Kuk 2nd and Byung Hwan Kim 3rd. With Jan Ratheisky having taken A1 and A2 for the overall win the remainder of the podium spots was still up for grabs. 2nd through to 5th spot were racing bumper to bumper desperately trying to find a way to the front. After a few exchanges, Max Park and Dominic Quek were battling hard, trading positions a couple times until the time was up. Dominic Quek would finish 2nd and Max Park 3rd but overall it was Max Park with the runner-up spot from Yoo Jae Kuk 3rd. Source: AOC [aocrc.com] |
Track Focus – RC Circuit Jean Nougier Posted: 11 Sep 2017 06:45 AM PDT Track Name – RC Circuit Jean Nougier Monteux, France is the location for the 21st running of the IFMAR 1:8 Onroad World Championship. The third time the French have put on the sport’s original World Championship, the track is located in the south of the country and is named after the grandfather of the man responsible for its creation. Built in 1999, the Association Monte Automodelisme Club (AMAC) run facility came about from a childhood passion for cars of former club president Eric Nougier. Eric’s grand father specialised in building motor bikes and after his father took that over they also added rc products to their shop. While Eric’s initial interest was in RC planes he soon discovered cars and as they say the rest is history. Expanding to two shops, the second of which was opened in the nearby city of Avignon, they added a location for control line flying and also a small track for cars. Built next to a river however after it was flooded several times the search began for a new location. Approaching a local kart track it was agreed that rc racing would run perfectly alongside and on land given to them by local government the track was born. Also the location for Motoball, football with the players riding on specially built motorbikes and trying to score goals with an oversized ball. A sport close to the Nougier family, the grandfather having built over 300 of these bikes, it was appropriate that the rc track be named after him, hence it being called RC Circuit Jean Nougier. As a track it covers a total length of 327 metres. A regular stop on the French National Championship calendar, prior to the Worlds the biggest event it has hosted was an EFRA GP in 2013. With a club membership of around 100 with a 50/50 split of nitro and electric racers, in preparation for the 2017 Worlds the track was completed resurfaced in February. While the layout wasn’t changed putting down new asphalt allowed them to increase the level of banking on the track. During the work the old, rather high and ‘dangerous’ curbing was removed and replaced with new flatter curbs. While facilities around the track are not on a par with those of last year’s 1:10 Onroad Nitro World Championship held at Gubbio, the most important thing, the track, is proving popular with drivers. Reigning champion Simon Kurzbuch said while it is ‘a very difficult track’ it is a track that is ‘worthy of a World Championship’. The Swiss driver said the layout allows and rewards risk. The back sweeper seems to be one key area in which time can be made or lost. Adding to the difficulty of the layout are the conditions drivers have faced so far. Kurzbuch said, ‘everyday is different’ with wind causing drivers a lot of difficulty yesterday as it carried a lot of dust from the surrounding countryside onto the track. Former Champion Robert Pietsch said while the day yesterday, the first day of official practice for all drivers, ‘was for nothing’ because the wind changed how the car felt every lap he said, ‘I like the track, it is a very good 1:8 track’. Describing it as technical he said the sweeper is not a regular corner in shape and as a result it is not easy to place the car in the right line but like Kurzbuch he likes the fact you need to take risks to find speed. Also 9-years old Harel Senderov in 5th and 11-years old Ofik David in 8th place really excelled in the final. Final results: Thanks to Yaniv Sivan for the report. |
Kaja Novotny trifecta at Czech 1/10th Off-road Nats Posted: 11 Sep 2017 05:43 AM PDT The final round of the Czech 1/10th Electric Off-road Nationals was held in Usti nad Labem. The organisers had created a new layout for the huge astro turf track and in the 2WD Buggy and 4WD Buggy classes it was Xray’s Kaja Novotny who managed to TQ all round of qualifying to take the pole positions in the respective classes. In the opening 2WD A-main Kaja suffered bad luck as a piece of astro turf caused havoc to his car which allowed Ales Bidovsky to take the win. A2 then was a done deal for Kaja which meant the final A-main would decide over the race win and also the overall title. For three minutes Kaja and Ales would have a great fight until the latter made a mistake and so Kaja would cruise to the win and the overall championship. Another fight was on for the overall 3rd place between Marek Schiller and Milan Mudra. Ultimately Milan would prevail to take the final podium spot. 2WD top 3 result: 2WD overall top 3 result: The 4WD class was a pretty straight forward affair for Kaja who took victories in A1 and A2 for the day’s win and also the overall title. A3 winner, Alex Bidovsky, came in 2nd, Milan Mudra obtained the 3rd place just as in 2WD. 4WD top 3 result: 4WD overall top 3 result: Following his overall title wins in 2WD and 4WD, Kaja Novotny has also sealed the championship in the Open Stadium Truck class from Adam Skopalik and Martin Minyuk, making it another all-Xray podium. Hupo Hönigl doubles at Austrian EP Buggy Nats Rd4 Posted: 11 Sep 2017 04:34 AM PDT Round 4 of the Austrian 1/10th Electric Buggy Nationals was held at the track of the ERT Steyregg club. It was the first ever Nationals on a full astro turf track JConcepts Lockness tyres being chosen as the control tyre. The fast layout and super high traction made it difficult to manage error-free runs and in the 2WD qualifying it was a 2-way battle between local driver Philipp Märzinger and Hupo Hönigl. Both had two TQ runs each, but in the end Phillip could take the overall TQ with the fastest overall time. In the finals Phillip was way too nervous and crashed early in the first two mains, which Hupo could win in cruise mode. Phillip finished 2nd by taking A3 and up and coming young star Lucas Grainer would round up the podium with his consistent performance over the whole weekend. 2WD Buggy final results: In 4WD qualifying Hupo definitely had the fastest car, but his “poor driving and way too many mistakes” made the qualifying pretty interesting with four different drivers taking a round. Ultimately Peter Pinisch took the overall TQ spot with the fastest time in front of Hupo and Rene Trauner, who also took one round. The first A-main was a super close battle between Peter and Hupo with Peter taking the win by just 4/1000th of a second. In the second main Peter made an early mistake and Hönigl could cruise to the win with a pretty big gap. Peter had to win the last main to take the win, because Hupo’s winning time was a lot faster than his, but Peter again made an early mistake and broke his car, so Hupo took the 4WD win as well. 4WD Buggy final results: With the 4th win this season Hupo Hönigl would already wrap up the Austrian Nationals title in the 4WD class while 2WD category will be decided at the final round, but Peter Pinisch has to win to have a chance to take the title.
