TORC Turkish On-road Nationals Rd5 – Report Posted: 20 Sep 2017 08:58 AM PDT The fifth and final round of the TORC Turkish On-road Nationals was held at the Bumod Bursa track recently. In the Nitro Touring class it was Mustafa Alp with the TQ and the best chances for the overall title as Alain Sarafyan, another title contender, only qualified in 10th after engine issues. The 45-minute main final was held in rather hot ambient temperatures which led to less power from the engines and also lower traction. TQ Alp was hardly able to hold Halit and Kagan behind and he struggled a lot in the opening stages but once the tyres were getting smaller Mustafa was getting more comfortable with the car, slowly extending his lead. Later Halit had a mistake and flame out which cost him more than two laps, and Kagan had a stop & go penalty due to bad refuelling, which also cost him some time. In the mean while Alain was pulling consistent lap times and moved up to 3rd place. Nearly everyone changed tires at about the 25-minute mark, and even though Alp had a flame out, he rejoined the race holding the lead. From there he would cruise to the win, taking the national title in the process. Kagan Aydın finished 2nd and Alain finished 3rd while Halit missed the podium by only 0.5 seconds after the 45 minutes of racing. 1/10th 200mm final results: In the Touring Stock class the opening A-main was a little tough for TQ holder Mustafa Alp as Murat Yazıcı was on fresher tires and immediately put pressure on Mustafa. In the second lap both had an incident but Murat suffered more, dropping back down the field, while Alp could able to hold on to the 2nd spot. After a lap, Mustafa passed then-leader Poyraz and continued to keep his lead. Later Poyraz and Murat made contact which allowed even more room for Mustafa who would bring home the win in A1 from a recovered Murat in 2nd. A2 went which a lot less drama as Alp took a tone-to-tone win that also secured him the overall championship title. Ahmet Kasap finished 2nd with Onur Karaçuhalılar coming in 3rd. Touring Stock final results: Elsewhere in the Touring Modified class it was Kayhan Ketenci with the win from Cem Nizamoğulları and Gökay Nizamoğulları. Patrick Ong wins at Arrowax Cup Singapore Posted: 20 Sep 2017 07:51 AM PDT The inaugural round of the 2017 Arrowmax Cup Singapore Series was held this past weekend at the large East Coast Circuit. In the competitive Formula 21.5T Blinky class, a 13-car grid took the start. At the end of qualifying, it was Joe Hwee who would come out with the TQ, followed by Patrick Ong in 2nd and Michael Siow in 3rd. In the finals, incidents for Patrick at the start of the opening A-main meant that he would finish in 5th, while Allister would storm through the field to take 2nd behind Michael Siow who seized the early initiative with the leg 1 win. In A2, normal service resumed as Patrick took a 4-seconds win over Michael to bring the fight for the overall win onto leg 3. In the final main Patrick would this time face the challenge from team-mate Allister, but he maintained his composure and confidence in his car to take the win by three seconds and with it the overall win for the day. JConcepts XB4 F2 buggy body shell Posted: 20 Sep 2017 07:24 AM PDT Coming from JConcepts is the new F2 body shell for the Xray XB4 2017 4WD buggy. Designed with aspects learned from the original Finnisher bodies, the F2 provides an even more aggressive look with included details which remain crucial to performance. An increased windshield angle provides a steady force upfront during mid-flight wind gusts on large jumps while the forward cab placement changes performance and visible bias which help steering rotation in low traction corners. The side-pods have been simplified and JC chamfered to remove unwanted changes in height to neutralise the at-speed handling. The rear of the pods have a dual step, scoop treatment which give a first in class look to the F2 body. The rear of the cab has the Finnisher step feature which allows the placement of a secondary side window and also several louver options off the rear. In addition to the newly designed body, JConcepts has included two of the latest Aero rear wings. Source: JConcepts [jconcepts.net] |

2017 Southern Nationals – Report Posted: 20 Sep 2017 01:54 AM PDT The 2017 Southern Nationals was a highly anticipated race for many. Living up to the hype from previous years, this special race drew in some of the top pro racers from around the nation making it the most competitive Southern Nationals to date. With drivers like Tekno’s Ryan Lutz and Joe Bornhorst, Agama’s Darren Bloomfield, HB Racing’s Cody King, Mugen’s Cole Ogden and Ryan Maifield, the Southern Nationals was set for fireworks during the A-finals. The track layout was magnificent. It was fun, it was fast, it was big, and of course … challenging. Perhaps one of the best 1/8th scale layouts of the year, every lap was a joy. However, the conditions did change going from a butter smooth surface to bumpy and super dusty making it difficult for racers to nail the right setup. As the lap count grew, so did the number of bumps and craters adding to the ever-growing challenge of delivering a perfect lap. By the mains, the track was a monster, but still very fun and made for epic racing. The 45 minute A-final of the Pro Nitro Buggy class was full of excitement and in the end, the separation was only 1.7 seconds between 1st and 2nd. Having TQ’d the class, Mugen’s Ryan Maifield built up a comfortable 15-second lead through the first half of the race until an unscheduled left rear tire change in the pits saw the Arizona speedster come out of pitlane in 2nd place. With a last minute decision to change his tire strategy, Maifield was short on time and rushed to get his tires mounted in order to make the start of the race. Having moved up from 13th on the grid to lead the race ahead of Maifield, Agama’s Darren Bloomfield was fast and pushing hard to defend his position. With pin point precision, Maifield would find a small gap and make a clean pass for the lead at the top step up jump in the far left corner. Just as things were going his way once again, Maifield’s front left tire was coming unglued and now certain his tires were not fully cured before the start the race. With Bloomfield smelling blood, he charged hard to close the gap to Maifield, but was unable to make the pass on the last lap. Maified would take the win with Bloomfield 2nd. Only 5.6 seconds back from the two front-runners and a major threat to take the win in the closing minutes was Ryan Lutz, who finished 3rd overall. Agama’s Darren Bloomfield was in the groove during A1 of Pro E-Buggy as Bloomfield took advantage of his track time from earlier in the day to take the win in A1. However, it was a different story in A2 as Maifield would choose a softer compound tire for A2 and was able to comfortably drive away from the field to take the win. A3 was much the same with Maifield turning the only 19 lap run in 10 minutes to take a solo victory lap and also the overall. Bloomfield would finish 2nd and Tekno’s Joe Bornhorst 3rd. It was another amazing race in the Pro Nitro Truggy class between the top 3 drivers. For a majority of the race, Tekno’s Joe Bornhorst would lead the way followed by Mugen’s Cole Ogden as these two truggy goliaths would lead change over seven times during the course of 45 minutes. While they were battling, Tekno’s Ryan Lutz would quietly close in and waited for the right moment. When that moment came, Lutz would make the pass on both drivers and jump to the lead with 5 laps to go. Lutz would go on to take the win with Cole Ogden 2nd and Joe Bornhorst 3rd. TLR’s Martin Harrison would shine in the E-Truggy class with terrific performances in A2 and A3 to take the overall. With Smiley Henn taking the win in A1, the pressure was on in A3 as the two drivers would only be separated by 1.5 seconds. Harrison would edge out Henn for the win with Henn finishing 2nd and TLR’s Nathan Harrison 3rd overall. Once again, Austin Jeffries would put in a remarkable effort in the Open Nitro Buggy class despite having a very difficult qualifying session. Having to bump into the Nitro Buggy A-main, Jeffries would start 13th on the A-main grid, but end up 1st on the podium. With smart driving by the youngster from Texas, Jeffries would take an incredible win with Cody Avant 2nd and Nick Sublette 3rd. It was a terrific showdown between HB Racing’s Eddie Laret and Tekno’s Austin Jeffries in the Open E-Buggy class. With A1 going to Eddie Laret, it looked as if Eddie was going to close out the open class in two mains, however, Jefferies would deny Laret the win in A2 and force an A3. Once again, Jeffries delivered an impeccable run to take the win in A3 to win the overall in Open E-Buggy. Laret looked fast all weekend and held onto 2nd place with Jerry Dean Jr. 3rd on the podium. The 40+ Nitro Buggy main was dominated by Team Associated’s Drew Spurgeon. With his closest rival, Mugen’s Shane Ogden having a horrible start, Drew was on cruise control and was able to take the win with a comfortable margin. Shane would finish 2nd with Bill Sheperd taking the final spot on the podium in 3rd. Source: JConcepts [jconcepts.net] |
Mikkelsen takes Norwegian Nitro Series 200mm title Posted: 20 Sep 2017 01:28 AM PDT The Norwegian Nitro Series concluded recently concluded and it was Anders Mikkelsen with the overall win. The series kicked off in late May at the Oslo Modellbilklubb, the largest track of the season, making for some high speed driving. In the end, Anders Mikkelsen took the TQ and win in front of André Roine and Brede Isaksen. The second round was held at the Lorenskog Modellbilklubb, a more technical track. The A-main was hampered by three very small rain showers that made the track very slippery, but all drivers made it thru the difficult conditions. After changing positions several times, Mikkelsen again got the TQ and win with his Shepherd, this time also in front of André Roine with Hans Nikolaisen climbing up onto 3rd spot on the podium. The third round was held at the Valdres Modellbilklubb, a one of a kind track with 3.5 meters height difference that makes it an extreme challenge for the cars and engines. This was also the warm-up for the Nationals to be held later in the Summer. Anders Mikkelsen and Christian Hovden fought really hard for the TQ, with only 0,.001s split before Mikkelsen’s last qualifier. Mikkelsen made it in the end, and got his third consecutive TQ at his home track. As always, there was lots of action during the A-main, but after 45 minutes, Mikkelsen got his third win in a row, followed by Hans Nikolaisen and Brede Isaksen. Finally it was time for the Norwegian Championships, the only 2-day race for the season. One of Norway’s best electric touring drivers, Nikolai Haaheim took the TQ with a 2nd hand car. Unfortunately, he suffered a servo failure and had to stop early in the A-main. The final was a hard race between Christian Hovden and Espen Myhre. Espen was in the lead until the last corner when he spun out and Christian could get the inside line to take the win by 0.5s. Coming out of retirement, Petter Solvberg really showed that he still has it and got the 3rd place. The final round of the series was hosted by the Lorenskog Modellbilklubb. The second stop of the series at this track this season saw the lap times dropping significantly and the event was dominated by another driver returning to the class after some years of absence. Georg Ellingsen got both the TQ and win with nobody matching his speed this day. Completing the podium were Trygve Bull Freng and Christian Hovden but when the dust had settled and the points were counted it was Anders Mikkelsen (Shepherd) with the overall title win from André Roine (Xray) 2nd and Hans Nikolaisen (Xray) 3rd. Tomas Kapicka wins Czech Open Masters Rd7 Posted: 20 Sep 2017 01:09 AM PDT Round 7 of the Czech Open Masters series was held in Kolin last weekend. In the Nitro Buggy class Xray’s Max Gotzl seemed to be in control of things as the took the overall TQ in front of Frantisek Kalenda (Serpent) and Jiri Benes (Xray). Max would also set the pace on the A-main, however technical issues would cost him the win and the race was on between Kyosho’s Tomas Kapicka and local hero Jiri Benes. Unfortunately for Jiri his buggy’s engine stalled during a pit stop and he would drop to 4th which allowed Tomas to bring home the win from Vladimir Pour (Xray) in 2nd and Martin Zicha (Mugen) 3rd. Thanks to Honza Kapicka for the report. |
