2018 Nordic Championships – Report Posted: 27 Aug 2018 04:24 AM PDT The 2018 1/8th Off-road Nordics were held at the Fullspeed RC racing Arena in Vantaa, Finland over the weekend. Even tough the race is called the Nordics, drivers from other countries were also welcomed to join. This time the most drivers came from Finland with Estonia being the second most represented country. The event kicked off on Friday with a day of practice with Saturday being qualification day and from the get go Joseph Quagraine with his own JQRacing car and Lauri Ruotsalainen driving a Team Associated showed good speed taking the first and second spot in Q1. Later Joona Haatanen showed great speed, taking Q2 and Q3 with his Team Associated in front of Joseph Quagraine and Max Mört. The semifinals were also held on Saturday evening with the first semi saw Joona Haatanen taking the win in front of Tomi Salonen. Max Mört was also quick but had some technical troubles but he still just managed to make the main final. The second semifinal was won by Lauri Ruotsalainen in front of Joseph Quagraine in 2nd and Ari Heinonen in 3rd. Since Lauri’s result was slightly faster than Joona’s, Lauri would snatch the valuable pole position. On Saturday there was a risk for rain so the Fullspeed crew decided to cover the track. This proved to be the right decision as there was rain during the night and thanks to the cover the track stayed in very good condition. The 45-minute main final started with Lauri in the lead. Lauri kept P1 for the first four laps before a mistake let Tomi Salonen by. Joona Haatanen had bad luck when a bearing failed causing him to retire. On lap 8 Max Mört managed to pass Tomi and from that point on Max, JQ and Ari were fighting for the lead, swapping places through the final. JQ managed to pull away and even had a 14-seconds lead at one point but then the ultra demanding track started to take its toll and JQ made some mistakes giving Ari the opportunity to close the gap. A couple laps before the end Ari had managed to close down the gap to just one second. After fighting hard JQ made a mistake on the penultimate lap, allowing Ari to take the lead. Ari managed to keep the lead and finished the race a couple of seconds in front of JQ. Max finished 3rd and Lauri 4th. Nitro final results: In the electric class the fight in the qualifiers was really tight but in the end Aleksi Vilkman driving his HB Racing car took the TQ in front of Jarno Siltanen in 2nd with Mugen. 3rd went to Hendrik Lainemäe for Xray. In the final the fight for the win was between these three drivers but in the end Jarno managed to win the opening two A-mains, securing the overall win. The last final was a tight battle of who was going to finish 2nd between Aleksi and Hendrik. On the last lap Hendrik made a mistake and Aleksi managed to overtake Hendrik to secure the 2nd spot. BRCA Touring Car Series Rd5 – Report Posted: 27 Aug 2018 04:05 AM PDT The final race in the BRCA Touring Car Series was a very wet and windy affair but despite the poor weather the Bedworth club put on a great event that was very well received by the strong 100 car entry. In the lead up to the last national of 2018 Olly Jefferies had dominated testing in the Modified class and despite a lack of traction in round one which saw him down the order the Xray driver went on to take TQ and in doing so setting an impressive record of taking TQ at every UK national this season and in 2017. Lining up behind Jefferies on this occasion was his team mate Alex Hagberg with Elliott Harper 3rd for Schumacher. Jefferies then went on to take both legs of the A-final ahead of Yokomo’s Harley Eldridge and Team Associated’s Matt White, Harley scoring her best result of the season and White capping off a very competitive domestic season. In the Boosted Stock class it was a new man for 2018 taking TQ in the form of Schumacher’s James Hart. Both legs of the A-final then were a classic battle between Hart and Zak Finlay with Finlay taking leg one and Hart taking the second leg. By virtue of a quicker time in leg one he got the vote in overall standings as the 3rd place went to Hart’s Schumacher team mate Chris Gunter. Billy Fletcher capped off a great season taking TQ and the win in the Blinky Stock class, second place went to Markus Askell with the 2018 champion Colin Jackson competing the podium. All three classes had been decided prior to the final round with Jefferies successfully defending his Modified title, same in Boosted for Zak Finlay who once again dominated this class and Colin Jackson taking the overall honours in Blinky Stock. Urban Touring Series Rd4 – Report Posted: 27 Aug 2018 03:40 AM PDT Round 4 of the Urban Touring Series was run this past weekend under scorching conditions at the rooftop circuit at the Singapore-based Urban PlaySpace. A smaller than usual field took to the start, but, with all the championship contenders in attendance, a highly competitive race was assured. In Saturday’s practice, it was PY Tang, Sean Lee and Dominic Quek that set the pace for the rest. Come race day, it was the same trio leading the way in qualifying. In Q1, PY Tang (ARC) drew first blood in the battle on new tyres, TQ-ing the round by almost 3 secs over Dominic Quek (Xray). PY would repeat in Q2, but by a significantly smaller margin of just 0.7s over Dominic. In Q3, Dominic finally managed to TQ – by 0.3s over PY – a qualifying round. In the final round of qualifying, it was the orange-white car of Dominic again who TQ-ed by a 0.5s margin. With two of the four qualifying rounds counting, PY would secure overall TQ by virtue of his faster Q1 time. Dominic would have to settle for a P2 start in the A-main, with Sean Lee (TRF) starting P3. On to the finals, and first up was the B-main bump-up race and it was Sebastian Lee (Tamiya) and Joe Lam (Yokomo) who joined the top-6 qualifiers who made the A-main directly. In A-main leg 1, PY had an early spin-out which Dominic quickly capitalised on to take the lead. Now in 2nd, PY had the faster car but still had to find a way past Dominic who was keeping the door shut throughout. PY managed, at one point, to nudge past Dominic but he was unable to make it stick, and Dominic was able to quickly take back the lead. Dominic held on for 5-mins to eventually take the win by a narrow 0.5s. Sean finished 3rd. In A-main leg 2, PY this time had a clean start and manage to pull away for a relatively easy win by some 1.6s. With Dominic finishing 2nd, the overall winner would now be determined in leg 3. The third and final A-main would go down as one of the most eventful and exhilarating finals seen at Urban. The field got off to a clean start, with PY holding on to his lead. Over the first lap, it was clear that Dominic’s car now had better corner speed, with the driver in full-on race mode. At the end of lap-2, a small error by PY clipping a dot just before the timing loop opened up a small gap for Dominic. Needing no invitation, Dominic was able to gun for the gap on the inside and emerge with the lead. While PY would still hold on for the lead down the straight, young Sean sensed blood and went for the pass around the sweeper. As Sean overshot the hairpin, PY would regain 2nd. However, in the next turn, PY again had a dot-meeting and Sean and Esmail Apandi (Yokomo) both swept past. PY managed to regain 3rd from Esmail in the next turn. All these played to Dominic’s advantage as he had now pulled out a larger lead. The overtaking action was still not done, as Esmail managed to squeeze past PY at the timing loop, but PY took it back at the end of the straight. At this point, we were still just 1min into the race. The duel between Esmail and PY continued, and they were now joined by Hasron Robana (Xray). Contact between PY and Esmail a few laps later opened the door for Hasron to move up into 3rd. PY would eventually regain 3rd from Hasron who finished 4th after holding off Esmail. With the win in leg 3, Dominic would secure the overall win in one of his most hard-fought of victories. The final round of the 2018 season of the Urban Touring Series is scheduled for November 4th.
