Posted: 27 Feb 2019 06:26 AM PST Last weekend’s round 5 of the 2018/19 Mibosport Cup not only saw the running of several electric off-road classes but also attracted a bunch of on-road racers to come out and compete. The record entry meant controlled practice had to cut short to allow for a reasonable ending of the day. Following the free and controlled practice on Friday things got serious on Saturday. In the Touring Modified class full things went up and down for the drivers with the challenging track layout meaning things mixed up quite a bit throughout the day. However, the top of the field remained the same as Zdenko Kunak secured the TQ position and brought home a deserved win. Oliver Havranek managed to stay in Zdenko’s slipstream to finish 2nd. Right behind him it was Jakub Rozycki from a storming Andreas Stiebler and Matej Sulc. In the Stock class Oliver Havranek had to fight with fast drivers from Poland. Mostly it was Blazej Orlowski who had a great setup and was able to keep the gap to Oli very close. However, run by run Oli increased his speed and confidence. Blazej Orlowski had to satisfy himself with the 2nd position and Karel Kratochvil took the 3rd spot. Marton Toth brought home P4 right ahead of Radko Cernohous. In the Formula class Lukas Hoch did not have a clear view from his cockpit so to speak. Andreas Stiebler took the TQ position, but did not manage to stay ahead of Lukas. His main rival passed him in each final and secured the overall victory. Herbert Weber finished 2bd and Andreas Stiebler came in 3rd. Simon Horak crossed the line in 4th overall and Thomas Dvorszky completed the top 5. 1/10 GT Pancar saw Igor Liptak continuing the strike of the Liptak family. Finishing 1st in A3 secured him the victory, the first two finals however came to Roman Krejci and Martin Zvara. When the dust had settled Igor took the win in front of Roman and Martin. Marek Helbich finished 4th and Radovan Konopik came in 5th. 1/12 Pancar saw Tomas Liptak dominating his favourite class as usual. Vitezslav Hola was able to move forward in the final standings and finished right behind Tomas. Martin Zvara ended up in 3rd and in front of Branislav Panak and Marcel Dostal. Over in Stadium Truck Phillipp Märzinger was the fastest guy in the class. Christian Wukonig took one victory in final heat, but it was not enough to get more than the 2nd overall spot. Rene Levetzov finished 3rd. Almost sixty drivers competed in the 2WD Buggy class making it the most popular class this weekend. Martin Bayer took the TQ and at the end the overall victory as well. Hupo Hönigl on the 2nd place pushed very hard, but none of his trying was enough to bring him up in the final order. Max Götzl finished 3rd in front of another Czech ace Ales Bidovsky. Bartolomiej Zambrzycki crossed the line 5th overall. Similar to 2WD Buggy, Martin Bayer stood on top of the 4WD field. This time Hupo did not cover his back as Max Götzl proved great performance and started 2nd. The situation remained unchanged even in finals. Martin won both main buggy classes, Max finished right behind covering 3rd placed Hupo Hönigl successfully. Bartolomiej Zambrzycki moved himself up to 4th spot in front of Zsolt Bajusz. The 2WD Stock Buggy class with control motors was finally starting to expand. This time 20 drivers arrived to attend. Jura Hudy was on point from the early beginning. He managed to win two final legs and finally reached the victory. Arnold Lorenz became runner-up and Rene Levetzov completed the top 3. 2019 Keilor Invitational Race – Report Posted: 27 Feb 2019 05:00 AM PST The 2019 Keilor Invitational Race was held in Melbourne, Australia last weekend. Australia’s outdoor version of the Reedy Race, the Keilor Invitational, has been held since 2014 with the top 10 1/10 Off-Road Modified and Stock racers from around the country racing head to head against each other over five rounds of 2WD and five rounds of 4WD for the overall Invitational title. In addition to the Invite classes, Open classes are offered with the winners receiving automatic invite to the following years event, and a junior 2WD class is also offered for the stars of tomorrow. The 2019 event had hot summer weather throughout the event, resulting in a naturally grooved track. The layout for this event was fast and flowing, with a huge tabletop to quad jump that required timing to navigate and proved decisive in the race results. Around 160 entries were received in total, with racers travelling from all around the country. In the Modified Invite class and with 2018 winner Kyle McBride unable to attend, the class was wide open with several younger racers in the field showing their class and maturity to figure strongly. After the 2WD portion, 14-years old Sydney racer Lachlan Donnelly was in front by one point over 3-time winner Ray Munday, taking two wins each with 14yo Jordan Isergin taking the other heat. 4WD day saw Ray and Lachlan go head to head again, with the event going down to the final race. Ray was able to take the overall win and his 4th title from Donnelly, with Tasmanian racer Brady Anthes 3rd and 13-years old Lachlan Munday making a comeback to place 4th overall after taking a heat win with FTD, with Jordan Isergin 1point behind in 5th. In the Stock Invite class, 2018 winner Matt Parsey made the trip from QLD to defend his title, but after day one of 2WD it was local Luke Chmielewski who led after a topsy turvy series of finals with no clear dominant racer. That all changed on Sunday for 4WD day, when Rob Jones took four straight heat wins to seal 1st place overall from Mark Clews and Ben Cribbin, Parsey just missing the podium with a 4th. The placings were close with 3rd to 6th separated by just two points after ten rounds of racing. In 2WD Modified Open and with everything to prove, Andrew “Aussie Builds” Selvaggi and Cameron “CamZam” Zammit battled it out for TQ, Selvaggi took 1st blood with TQ and led for the first three minutes of the single final until a crash gave Cam the lead which he held to the end with a 5-seconds win over Selvaggi. In 3rd place was young Queensland racer Troy Milton, very happy after travelling so far for his first run at Keilor. In 4WD Modified Open and similar to the 2WD class, qualifying was a battle between Selvaggi and Zammit, with Selvaggi taking pole. Selvaggi led for the first few laps before a crash, Zammit then taking control for the rest of the race and Selvaggi taking a DNF. 2nd place was taken by young South Australian racer Damon Davis-Perry, with Milton again claiming a podium. 2WD 17.5 Open was the biggest field of the weekend, with 40 entries all racing for a place in the 2020 event. Jay Bloss took a well deserved TQ after strong recent showings, with Nathan Facciol a popular 2nd and multi-time stock national champ Scott Giles 3rd. The final was a memorable one, with Bloss making a mistake on lap one dropping back to 6th, giving Scott Giles the lead. Bloss methodically worked through traffic before an uncharacteristic error by Giles allowed Bloss to re-take the lead. The two battled for the lead until the last lap, Bloss taking his first win from Giles and Facciol a very happy 3rd in front of 9-yo racer Camden Camilleri who continues to impress. 4WD 13.5 Open saw another big field, Bloss again took TQ from Facciol with 9-years old sensation Jak Parsey 3rd from Scott Giles. In the final Bloss got a good start and held the lead for six laps until Parsey took the lead and started to pull away. Unfortunately for Jak a small incident led to a broken front end, Jay retaking the lead momentarily before Giles made his move and held on for a 3-seconds win and a place in the 2020 event. Bloss took 2nd with Paul Slifka 3rd, Facciol 4th and fast girl Shelby “Shelbinator” Bloss taking a very popular 5th place. 18 junior racers entered for the 2WD Junior class, all under 16 running 2WD 17.5 buggies. Keilor has pushed the junior class very heavily and this has resulted in many new racers, and for this event entries were also received from interstate. 9-yo Jak Parsey took TQ from 11-yo Shelby Bloss, with Adam and Caden Simpson 3rd and 4th on the grid from Robert Holliday. The entire pits crowded the track for the finals, with IFMAR worlds commentator Chris Mitchell commentating for additional atmosphere. The B-final was won by Amelia Facciol. The A-final saw Jak Parsey stretch out a 20s lead and hold it for the win from Shelby, Robert Holliday a great 3rd and 9yo Angus Brown improving from 8th to 4th. Thanks to Ray Munday for the report. Martin Bayer takes double Mibosport Cup title Posted: 27 Feb 2019 04:42 AM PST The grand final of the 2018/19 Mibosport Cup was held in Hrotovice last weekend with a record entry of 270 drivers. The race was special in that way, that double points were given, meaning overall standing could change a lot. The race was held in the usual electric on-road and off-road classes and in the buggy categories it was Hupo Hönigl who dominated the 2WD practice rounds while Martin Bayer was fastest in 4WD. After the qualifiers however it was Martin on top in both classes followed by Ales Bidovsky and Hupo in 2nd and 3rd in 2WD, while in 4WD it was Adam Izsay 2nd and Hupo again 3rd. The 4WD finals saw Martin taking the win in A1 and A2 to secure the overall win. Max Götzl put in good runs in A1 and A2 and he even tried to catch Martin, but ultimately Max had to settle for 2nd in both of the finals and that’s where he finished in the end. Hupo took an overall 3rd place to round out an all-Xray podium in front of 4th Bartolomiej Zambrzycki and 5th Zsolt Bajusz. In the 2WD class, Hupo was able to take the win in A1 because of Martin’s stupid mistake in the last lap, but Martin didn’t give up and took the wins in A2 and A3 to take the overall victory. Hupo finished on the overall runner-up in front of Max Götzl for another all-Xray top 3. Ales Bidovsky took 4th and Bartolomiej Zambrzycki 5th. In 2WD Stock class, Juraj Hudy (Xray) drove great in the finals and took the overall win from Arnold Lorenz and Team Associated driver, Rene Levetzow. As this was the last race of this season’s series, there was the overall championship award giving ceremony. Xray’s Martin Bayer was crowned the 2WD and 4WD champion as Xray teammate, Hupo took the 2nd step on the podium in both classes. Max Götzl (Xray) came in 3rd in 4WD while Ales Bidovsky (Team Associated) completed the 2WD podium. 20th Annual Dirt Nitro Challenge – Report Posted: 27 Feb 2019 12:22 AM PST There are not many RC races that are bigger, do it better, and have the intensity like The Dirt Nitro Challenge. This year was special as it marked the 20th Annual of the biggest nitro race on US soil and this year didn’t disappoint. Almost every manufacturer sent drivers to this race making the atmosphere very much like a Worlds competition with numerous drivers traveling from all across Europe to join in on the action. This year, it was offered a little bit of everything. From freezing cold temps, high winds, rain delays, and eventually sunshine, mother nature played a dramatic part, but this is nothing new for an outdoor race. What was different this year was the location and venue as the DNC was relocated after news broke last year that Fear Farm was shutting down. Now, located at the Perris, California’s Southern California Fair Grounds, there’s a new look to the DNC but still consisted of the same awesome racing vibes that its well known for. Joey Christensen and The Dirt crew are on top of the game. They’ve got the reputation, they’ve got the skills, and they know how to put on a good show. Despite the tough weather conditions when building the track, Joey decided to move to plan B and built the 1/8th scale track where the 1/5th scale was originally planned to go since the 1/8th track was basically underwater. The decision proved to make all the difference in the world as the track was completed just in time for open practice Wednesday morning. The end result was a fantastic layout that had a good amount of jumps with many difficult elements to challenge all drivers including the best in the world. What makes the DNC so special is how the track evolves throughout the event as Joey only fixes jump faces after each day. For the most part, the holes, ruts, and bumps in corners are usually left alone making it harder on the drivers to be pinpoint accurate and consistent. This is where the word challenge in Dirt Nitro Challenge comes in making it one of the most difficult, grueling races we have in RC. As for the racing action, it was the show everyone was waiting for as the Pro Nitro Buggies took the stage and the best 1/8th drivers in the world in attendance. Like a machine, Mugen’s Ryan Maifield, never skipped a beat even when he had the current IFMAR World Champion going full gas chasing after him. On a different pitstop strategy, Ongaro momentarily took the lead as he took 1 less pitstop. However, the difference wasn’t enough as Ryan displayed an uncanny ability to stay focused and drove in a manner that allowed him to retake the lead and slowly pull away. By the end of the race, Ryan was 1 lap up on the entire field and crossed the line taking his 2nd DNC win of the event and a total of 5 DNC Pro Nitro Buggy titles. Late in the race, TLR’s Dakotah Phend silently marched his way towards the front and was able to get by Davide in the closing laps to land himself an impressive 2nd place finish. Being his 1st DNC and only his 2nd time racing in the US, Davide turned some heads as the young Italian and current WC finished 3rd. The stage was set for the 1st Pro Nitro race Saturday evening with Mugen’s Ryan Maifield led the elite field of drivers from the tone. It was clearly obvious early on that Ryan Maifield and AE’s Davide Ongaro were on a different level as the two aces separated themselves from the field as Davide moved up quickly from 5th to 2nd. From there, it was a game of nerves as the young Italian World Champion was on the charge to catch up to Maifield to contest for the lead. Having cut the lead down to just 1.5 seconds, it looked as if Ongaro was going on pace to catch the 4-time DNC Buggy champion, but Maifield stayed mentally strong and focused on his lines and his consistency. With flawless pitstops, Ryan slowly built back his lead and crossed the line in 1st place. Not accustomed to the Truggy life and 1st time at the DNC, Ongaro showed his World Class talent and remarkably finished 2nd. Tekno’s Joe Bornhorst delivered another polished run separating himself from the rest of the field and finished stoked in 3rd. HB Racing’s David Ronnefalk was lights out fast during the 10 minute A-Main in Pro E-Buggy. The Swedish star was able to gap the field and control the pace the way he wanted. However, a late crash and fumbled marshal job saw David’s lead shrink to just 1.8 seconds in the end. Despite the mishap, David maintained the lead and took the win. Tekno’s Joe Bornhorst has put in his time and it is definitely showing with another great result finishing 2nd. Mugen’s Ryan Maifield is always a contender. Letting it all hang out after a few mistakes early on, Ryan found a great rhythm and charged hard and finished 3rd on the podium. Open E-Truggy was dominated by Team Associated’s AJ Schumacher. After the intense 10 minutes was up, AJ built up a huge lead and was able to cruise home in 1st place. Agama’s Billy Tylaska showed great pace and consistency and finished 2nd while HB Racing’s Cody Thompson finished where he qualified in 3rd place. The 30-minute main event was extremely exciting in the Intermediate Nitro Buggy class as the top 3 drivers swapped many times for the lead. When the dust settled, it was HB Racing’s Kurt Kellum who took the win with Kyosho’s Zach Rogers 2nd and TLR’s Jeff Guest bumping into the A-Main and finished 3rd on the podium. It was a big task, but Kyosho’s Monty Houston was up for to the challenge as the speedy veteran put it all together and took a memorable win in the Intermediate Nitro Truggy class. Team Associated’s AJ Schumacher gave it a good shot and held the lead for a good duration and brought home 2nd place. Pablo Tejada was able to rise to the occasion moving up 3 spots and finished 3rd. JQRacing’s Chris Marrale stepped up big in the Intermediate E-Buggy A-Main as he found another gear during the 10 minute main moving up from 6th and took an impressive win. Kyosho team manager and all around great guy, Zach Rogers, put in a great drive and finished 2nd with HB Racing’s Kurt Kellum grabbing the final spot on the podium. It was a remarkable performance by the youngest racer at the DNC during the 30 minute Sportsman Nitro Buggy class as Phi Long Nguyen, aka “Little Bump”, stayed composed and consistent taking a hugely popular win for the 7-year-old. Finishing 2nd was Dillon Hoffman, who had a dream race starting from 15th on the grid. Another driver making big moves at the big race was Eduardo Jaramillo, who started 12th and finished 3rd. The Sportsman Nitro Truggy race was a stellar race won by “Little Joe Romero”, who battled it out with superfast Dienna Eichenberger and Jack Pott and took a well-deserved win. Dienna showed great pace and composure and finished 2nd with Jack 3rd completing the podium. During the 10 minute long Sportsman E-Buggy main, 3rd place qualifier Chris Zega was on the move as his clutch driving towards the end of the race paid off allowing him to finish ahead of some future fast drivers as he took the win. Ever Lobos (TQ) fought hard and was able to eclipse 7-year-old phenom, Phi Long Nguyen for 2nd. Phi Long drove remarkably well and finished out the main in 3rd place. JQRacing’s Greg Degani was on point when it mattered most during the 40+ Nitro Buggy main. The race was extremely close between the top 3 with only 8 seconds separating them after 30 minutes on a rough track. 1st place went to Degani with Team Associated’s Richard Saxton 2nd and 7 seconds back. The last few laps were hectic, as Mugen’s Ronda Drake gave it her all and finished 3rd and only 1 second back from Saxton. TLR’s Don Vinkemulder was the driver to beat during the 30 minute main in the 40+ Nitro Truggy class. However, chasing hard after losing the lead to Vinkemulder, Mugen’s Ronda Drake nearly pulled off the win and finished 2nd only 4 seconds back. 3rd place went to Chris Nelson, who was impressively fast all weekend. It was lights out for Serpent’s Billy Easton in the 40+ E-Buggy class as the former WC drove near flawless to claim the win. Roman Gastelum was the closest competitor to Billy, as he moved up 3 spots to finish 2nd. Miguel Perez found himself in 3rd after Paul Ciccarello’s unfortunate late race DNF moved Miguel into 3rd.
