Dear reader, Hello again—it’s been a while. This is my first newsletter since May. To make a long and sad story short: I took some time off work to care for my mom, who wasn’t well, and then I lost her. It was unexpected and very quick, and I was completely unprepared for the toll it would take on my life. Thankfully, I have the most excellent and understanding colleagues, who stepped in during my absence to report on the city’s food news and to make sure Table Talk arrived in your inboxes every Thursday. I was living in Burlington and eating a lot of hospital food and pizza slices (shout-out to Lugano’s), so I’m embarrassingly out of the loop (and possibly slightly malnourished). But it seems as though it’s been quite a summer for Toronto’s food scene. We finally got a Nobu! Shant Mardirosian is back with a new kind of burger. Also *checks notes* Grant van Gameren has returned, Jen Agg just opened a new kitchen on Geary, and I recently enjoyed a couple of pints at the second coming of Thirsty and Miserable, one of my favourite beer bars, which reopened in the west end. It’s like I went to sleep for three months and woke up in 2013, but I’m not mad about it. As luck would have it, this week’s newsletter includes a roundup of brand-new restaurants I’m excited to try. Plus, a very cool new pop-up dinner series and a taco takeout window in Leslieville. For more of our food-and-drink coverage, visit torontolife.com or subscribe to our print edition. |

In the name of research, I plan on eating my feelings through this list of new restaurants that includes a takeout burger joint, an award-winning Vietnamese spot, a cabaret-themed cocktail bar and buzzy Cantonese kitchen from Hong Kong. |

| Chef Luis Valenzuela has graced Toronto with its very first taco takeout window. Holi Taco, Leslieville’s new literal hole in the wall, serves up tacos to be eaten quickly and on the go—much like they are at the taquerias found in Valenzuela’s hometown of Toluca, Mexico. See what’s on the menu. |

| For far too long, wine pairings have belonged to a select few cuisines. But this Toronto-based pop-up series wants everyone to know that reds, whites and rosés can go with more than just aged cheese, freshly shucked oysters and coq au vin. Tia Zhang and Kori Wan, the co-founders of Wine Pairing Company, host dinners where they match natural wine, sake and cider with Chinese dishes. “Most wine descriptions reference common Western foods,” says Zhang. “At WPC, we integrate Asian ingredients and spices to describe wines.” See what went down at a recent pairing dinner. |
