Director Stephanie Stebich Reflects on Recent Developments at SAAM
Stephanie Stebich, the Margaret and Terry Stent Director, discusses new initiatives at the Smithsonian American Art Museum. She introduces the museum’s recently appointed head curator, Dr. Randall Griffey, who will lead the major reinstallation and reinterpretation plan for all three floors of the museum’s permanent collection galleries. The project will create welcoming and dynamic gallery spaces, as well as allow for more new acquisitions to be on view.
Stebich also describes SAAM’s efforts to highlight women artists through the web comic series Drawn to Art: Ten Tales of Inspiring Women Artists, now in its second year, and the role of self-taught artists in telling stories of underrepresented communities. The personal stories of 43 self-taught artists are at the forefront of the current exhibition, We Are Made of Stories: Self-Taught Artists in the Robson Family Collection. |
