Kaya! It's Bunuru and the hottest time of the year with little to no rain. Hot easterly winds continue with a cooling sea breeze most afternoons if you're close to the coast. It is also a time of the white flowers with lots of white flowering gums in full bloom, including Jarrah and Marri.
Another striking flower that is hard to go past is the female Zamia (Macrozamia riedlei). Being much larger than that of its male counterpart, the huge cones emerge from the centre of the plant with masses of a cotton wool like substance. You'll see plenty of these plants in the corridor and the birds and insects enjoying them too.

Friday the 19th March 2021
will be the first community science conference hosted by the Rehabilitating Roe 8 project with support from Perth Region NRM, SERCUL and DBCA.  The conference will bring together people who share an interest in community based land care and ecological restoration. Students, community land carers, scientists and government officers will be able to share their knowledge and experiences. The event will be fully catered for and ticket prices have been kept low. To buy a ticketor find out more visit here.

Path Network Plan

The Rehabilitating Roe 8 project vision incorporates the need for a connected path network across the corridor to enable people to come and enjoy the space.  One of the challenges of developing a path network is knowing where paths can be sustainably created so that they provide good access but take into account environmental impacts.  Many informal paths exist already within the corridor and the Rehabilitating Roe 8 Advisory Committee along with our path consultant invite you to have you say on the path network plan.
To learn more about the project visit here.  An online survey will be available for community members to provide input.  For more information contact the Project Manager.
Aboriginal Archaeological Survey

It was an exciting time in December when the archaeological team arrived on site to commence the Aboriginal archaeological survey.  The survey objective is to reconfirm and further investigate the scale of Aboriginal artifacts within the area.  The survey occurred within the formally registered Aboriginal site and within another site that is co-located.  The digs revealed several stone artifacts many likley to be several thousands of years old.  This important work will help to provide more evidence of the use of this area by Nyungar people and hopefully will result in better protection measures into the future.  Many thanks to the traditional owners and student volunteers who assisted the team.

New RR8 Advisory Committee
The new Rehabilitating Roe 8 Advisory Committee met for the first time this year last week.  The committee comprises of community members (non-affiliated), resident groups, scientific advisors, non-government organisations and a government body to assist with the implementation of the Rehabilitating Roe 8 Management Plan.  Membership on the committee is for a two year period.  The committee meet on a monthly basis to discuss issues that arise and guide implementation of works.  Meeting minutes and agendas are available online to view.
Fire in the corridor - regrowth
In late December a fire occurred within the corridor located at Forest Rd North (Sebastian Crescent).  While the fire fighters were quick to respond and contain the blaze some impact to the site was sustained.  Fortunately we are seeing many of the plants recover now.  With additional infill planting into the site this coming winter we hope that the overall damage will be low. The project team have ensured that the corridor has firebreaks installed and is trying to reduce fuel loads through active weed control throughout the corridor.  If you notice any suspicious activity please report it immediately.

Weed control underway
Works are under way within the corridor targeting a number of annual weeds.  The weed control works will assist in reducing fire fuel loads with regards to exotic grasses and assist with reducing competition for newly installed native seedlings.
Erosion control on paths
Several areas within the corridor have had a treatment of mulch or limestone applied to assist with stablised the ground during maintenance works.  Seedlings are being watered fortnightly with will continue for another month.  These heavy water carts can get bogged in our soft sands and so to ensure safe access and potential damage to the site treatments have been installed.  They also make it easier for pedestrians to walk through the site.
Plant of the month

Marri - Corymbia calophylla

This fabulous tree is flowering and large displays of flowers can be seen.  A favorite foraging tree for Black Cockatoos this important species is widespread through the corridor.  Bees can be seen busily gathering pollen with a variety of birds also enjoying the bounty.
