Kaya! Welcome to Djeran (April and May).

The Noongar season of adulthood. A key indicator of the change in season is the cool nights, light winds from the south and dewy mornings. Djeran is a time of red flowers, especially those of the red flowering gum (Corymbia ficifolia), or you may notice the flying ants, red 'rust' and seed cones forming on male and female Sheoaks (Allocasuarina Fraseriana).

Traditionally, during this period, foods included Zamia seeds collected a season earlier, as well as root bulbs of the Yanget (Bullrushes), freshwater fish, frogs and turtles.
Land Management & Works Update
Update of land management and works occurring in the corridor over the past two months:
  • Natural area management services have undertaken weed control and waste removal from the corridor
  • Vegetation pruning surrounding powerlines in North Lake began today to minimize fire risks. Chris Beaton - Head of Sustainability and Environment and a Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions representative attended the site to identify any areas that may need special attention and care
  • Limestone Path in Malvolio Rd bushland was completed mid-February
  • Firebreak maintenance along Quickly cr - green waste and calthrop removed
  • Fence repairs have taken place at two locations at North Lake Rd East. If anyone notices other fence damages, please report to the City of Cockburn
  • Gate damage on eastern side of North Lake Rd East and Internal gate damaged at Bibra Drive entrance has been identified and repairs are underway
  • Stakes and tree guards have been removed from dead plants during 2021 planting season and some stakes have donated to Eco Action WA for the production of bee hotels
  • So far, the survival rate of plants from 2021 planting season is 68%. Despite being lower than expected, it is comparable to other revegetation data across the Perth region, due to the extremely long and hot summer days this season
  • Watering has continued watering in the corridor before the winter rains commence
New Rehabilitating Roe 8 Project Manager

Welcome Adam Peck - The new Rehabilitating Roe 8 Project Manager

"I am from England originally and I was blown away by the biodiversity and beauty of WA's landscape. I am passionate about conservation and sustainability, WA's flora (I particularly love orchids) and fauna. Ngoolark/Carnaby's have a special place in my heart and I do everything I can to protect these birds and their habitat.

I applied for this job because it is an important local project. I have lived in Hamilton Hill for 20 years, both my wife and myself took part in the protests to protect our precious bush. I believe the two biggest challenges to life on earth are climate change and biodiversity loss and this project addresses both. Not only that, it also addresses the Urban Heat Island Effect and city resident's needs to have access to nature.

I have a BSc in Environmental Restoration with Honours from Murdoch University. Since then I have spent 9 years at DBCA working on revegetation research in the Wheatbelt and 5 years at BirdLife Australia. At BirdLife I coordinated 5 Great Cocky Counts and Carnaby's breeding surveys. I worked a lot with volunteers, which I'm keen to do again in this new role.

I look forward to meeting everyone engaged in this project and working collaboratively with the community to continue the great work done to date."

- Adam Peck
