Reining in Our Debt Last week, I voted against the trillion-dollar omnibus spending bill. While the bill increased funding for our military, border security, and important education resources, it fell short in many other areas. We still saw funding for programs that do not make efficient use of federal funds, like continued financial backing for Obamacare. I would have preferred to see a more significant shift in how we spend taxpayer money and will continue to vote against any legislation that frivolously wastes it.
Reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program In Senate Banking Committee, I questioned witnesses on the reauthorization of the National Flood Insurance Program. The floods in 2015 devastated so many families, and as I surveyed places like Sumter, I discovered that almost none of the families had flood insurance. This issue concerns me. I believe this also reinforces the necessity for nationwide mapping to be more accurate so that South Carolina, and other states, are better prepared for recovery. Watch below:
Supporting Small Businesses As a former small business owner, I am committed to ensuring entrepreneurs have the resources to succeed and grow. In South Carolina, small businesses represent 97% of all employers and have had an amazing impact on the economy. One particular business that has stood out is Tactical Medical Solutions (TacMed), a veteran-owned enterprise from Anderson, South Carolina. By serving our nation’s brave men and women in uniform, they continue to grow and undergird the dynamic nature of our state’s economy, especially in the Upstate.
In recognition of their continued success, I nominated TacMed to be honored by the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship as the Small Business of the Day for National Small Business Week. TacMed will be recognized in the Congressional Record of the U.S. Senate for their steady growth and contribution to the Anderson community for National Small Business Week.
