Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Over the past year, we focused on harnessing our expertise and capability to develop new programs, adapt current programs and offer flexible service delivery to support and guide our clients and the community through mental health and relationships concerns. The learnings we have gained will indeed pave the way to a more client-centric approach with strong growth and innovative practice to deliver better outcomes to the clients we serve in the years to come.

I would like to thank our valued clients, partners, and supporters for your continued support and loyalty to Relationship Matters.

On behalf of the team at Relationship Matters, we wish you an enjoyable and restful festive season. It is a time of celebration, joy, and togetherness. I hope the New Year brings renewed hope, energy, and success.

Yours sincerely,
Janet Jukes

A family dispute resolution specialist joins us

Relationship Matters is pleased to welcome Jeff Katz to the Dispute Resolution team as our newly appointed Senior Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner.  Jeff is a lawyer turned mediator/conciliator who has been practicing since 1995 almost exclusively in relationship-oriented, evidence-based dispute resolution interventions, particularly as a Family Dispute Resolution Practitioner. He has conducted thousands of mediations/conciliations in a wide range of settings including the not-for-profit and government sectors, family courts, and in his private practice, Family Transitions, through which he was integrally involved in the development, research, and teaching of now commonly integrated child inclusive and child-focused mediation practices in Australia and elsewhere.

Jeff will be seeing clients at our city office, as well as offering online sessions.  He is able to support Relationship Matters clients to resolve issues around both parenting and property/ financial matters.

Self-pacedParenting after Separation program

Our Relationship Learning program launched an innovative and state-of-the-art platform using Moodle to deliver programs online. Our Online Learning Centre provides self-paced learning where clients can tailor their learning to suit individual needs and time constraints. This client-centered approach has seen an increase in client engagement and uptake due to its flexibility, convenience, and useful content.

Our Parenting After Separation program is now available in an online format that enables easily available learning at a pace to suit each individual.  This program provides parents with key information and strategies to assist them and their children to successfully adjust to separation and/or associated conflict.
A client testimonial:
"I was quite nervous about doing the course and especially the Virtual classroom but found it to be extremely helpful and informative"

Workplace services

Organisations who invest in a mentally healthy work environment receive many advantages include a significant return on investment, as well as more productive and engaged employees. Our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) and other workplace services have evolved over 20 years to help organisations build a psychologically safe workplace. We provide EAP services to organisations with diverse staffing profiles including culturally and linguistically diverse, LGBTIQ+, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander employees. EAP primarily offers counselling for people who require assistance with issues that impact their wellbeing, including work and non-work issues.  This includes health services staff who are on the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In addition to the EAP, workplace services provide organisations with a suite of offerings that focus on enhancing employee skills, namely psychologically safe, respectful, and inclusive workplaces. These services include training, team development, individual coaching, critical incident management, and group counselling. We can also work with organisations to develop bespoke solutions to wellbeing issues in the workplace. Our team of practitioners has experience in working with trauma, including abuse, family violence, stigma, and discrimination, and they undertake regular training. We also maintain a pool of practitioners with specialist training in critical incident response, debriefing to respond to traumatic incidents, and work-related psychological issues.

Enlighting men on the impact of their behaviours

The last 20 months of Covid 19 restrictions have been difficult for many families, with new pressures added to relationships that may have already been feeling the strain.

For many men, the challenges this period has created have been immense: loss of work, or fear of loss of income with unstable work, lower family incomes, children being homeschooled, no socialising or seeing extended family, and no outlets such as the gym or watching sport or live music.

As a man, you may have found yourself responding to situations in ways that have hurt or upset your family. The strain of this period may have meant that you have decided that you no longer want to behave this way. Or possibly a magistrate or family court judge has indicated that you should do a Men’s Behaviour Change Program (MBCP). Whatever the pathway to the MBCP, we run programs in the CBD and Wyndham up to 4 nights per week. There is bound to be one that fits your schedule.

We aim to treat you with respect, honesty, and fairness. We will do this while we also challenge your views on such things as your role as a father, what it means to be a man/parent/partner in the 21st century, and how you communicate.

We will encourage you to look at the impact of the behaviours that you use, not just the reasons you use them.

Adoption resources for professionals

A Suite of Video & Recommended Resources for Teachers, Doctors, and Mental Health Professionals

This project was developed to provide better education of key professionals who intersect in the lives of adoptees. We hope this will support professionals to understand adoptees and hear their voices to give them an in-depth knowledge of their experiences which will identify and provide much-needed post-adoption support.

This professional development education series was developed in collaboration with Relationship Matters and InterCountry Adoptee Voices (ICAV).
