Newcastle rallies for Hannah | |
| Hundreds of people rallied in Newcastle last night in the wake of the murder of Brisbane mum Hannah Clarke and her three children.
Several speakers addressed the crowd in Civic Park, expressing their anger, sorrow and frustration over the brutal murder of the family.
The rally called for tougher penalties for perpetrators of domestic violence and for urgent action from state and federal governments. | |

| It's been 20 years since meatworker Katherine Knight killed and mutilated her partner John Price at Aberdeen in the Upper Hunter.
At the time the media dubbed her the 'female Hannibal Lecter' because of the grisly nature of the crime.

Lake Macquarie nursing home fails every industry standard | |
| The Tenison Residential Aged Care facility at Swansea was found to pose "an immediate and severe risk to the safety, health and wellbeing of its patients" when it was audited in December.
The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission report found some patients were sleeping on towels and were left in soiled continence aids, and the facility didn't have effective systems to respond to the abuse and neglect of its patients.
After failing to meet every industry standard, the home has been sanctioned by the federal Health Department, government subsidies have been cut off, and the manager has been stood down. | |

Cracks found in light rail track | |
| Scheduled maintenance works have found a series of cracks in the Newcastle light rail tracks, just a year after it opened.
The small cracks were detected at four weld points during scheduled maintenance undertaken in January.
Light rail services are travelling at a reduced speed limit of 10 km/h through three sections of the track near Worth Place and Civic.
The contractor responsible for building the Newcastle Light Rail, Downer EDI, will complete the repairs in line with its contractual warranty.
A spokesperson for Transport for NSW says there is no risk to the safety of customers and staff. | |
