Observing Memorial Day: Remembering Those Who Died To Keep America Free
For this week’s newsletter, I'm shining the spotlight on one of the most important days Americans celebrate: Memorial Day.
Freedom isn’t free. From the revolutionaries of 1776 and the heroes at Normandy, to the Americans who gave their lives in Afghanistan, millions of our soldiers have paid the ultimate price to protect our God-given rights. This Memorial Day, I am recognizing the debt we owe to every brave service member. They gave their life for liberty.
As we commemorate this day, the question I ask myself is why? What made millions of Americans willing to lay down their very lives for our country? The answer is simple: they had faith in America. Faith in the ideals that make our nation the greatest on earth. Faith in the fundamental human rights they were fighting for - freedom of speech, religious liberty, equality under the law, and individual autonomy.
Today, many Americans are losing faith in our nation. They’re losing confidence that we can continue to be the beacon of freedom and opportunity we’ve been for generations. I believe we must not give up faith in America. We must not let the sacrifice of those who have gone before us be in vain. Americans don’t give up when the going gets tough. That’s not who we are. We are overcomers in every sense of the word. The strength of our people has carried us through a civil war, two world wars, and countless other battles for freedom. That’s how I know our nation can overcome the struggles we face today. The United States has overcome incredible obstacles. Now, we must come together and preserve the God-given opportunity in front of us to make the next century the greatest chapter of American history.
While our nation could never hope to pay back the debt we owe to every brave man and woman who died to give us freedom, we must and can forge ahead to stand up for the liberties they fought for. It’s the least each of us can do to follow their courageous example and safeguard our hard-won freedoms for the next generation. And it’s the least Americans can do to set aside a day to honor their sacrifice. Because without them, there would be no America.
