Zainab Al-Suwaij is executive director of the American Islamic Congress, founded after 9/11 to promote interfaith relations in the West and democratic values in the Muslim world. The Washington Post has described her as someone “who favors designer head scarves” while being “one of the few women to take up arms in a 1991 guerrilla uprising against [Saddam] Hussein.” She attended Southern Connecticut University and taught at Yale. Ms. Al-Suwaij lives in the DC area.
