Remote Business Meetings: Keeping Them Legally Sound

Back in February—which feels like 20 years ago, thanks to the pandemic—we unveiled a new article series by attorney and senior editor Richard Hammar focusing on 15 key topics every pastor should know. From governing documents to church insurance to self-employment taxes, Hammar gives a crucial overview of the most common legal, tax, risk, and finance matters that pastors will encounter.

One of his topics—parliamentary procedure—has stood out to me especially throughout these past several months. Many churches nationwide already face numerous challenges with running board or congregational meetings, and taking the official actions necessary for the short- and long-term trajectories of their ministries.

How can they ensure any virtual meetings they host accomplish needed actions—and in a manner that can withstand future scrutiny, should questions or controversies arise?

To help answer that question, check out this article addressing five questions leaders should answer before hosting a virtual business meeting, as well as this toolkit resource designed specifically for churches.
