First-time claims for jobless benefits reached a seasonally adjusted 742,000 last week, an increase from 711,000 during the previous week. "Momentum in the economy, all else equal, should continue, but the virus might cause a rise for a few weeks," notes Michelle Meyer of BofA Global Research.

WeWork is expanding a New York City pilot -- dubbed WeWork on Demand -- to 160 of its sites across 11 US cities that enables workers to reserve desks or meeting rooms within shared workspaces via an app. The move is a signal that the sharing economy is coming to office space as remote work looks likely to remain a trend after the pandemic.

Twenty-six percent of employers plan to reduce pay if remote workers relocate to places with lower living costs, 9% will cut pay for noncritical employees and 61% don't intend to adjust salaries, according to a Willis Towers Watson survey. Companies are reviewing wider compensation programs to reflect the costs of remote work, such as home technology.
