Happy Juneteenth Reader! Today is a day to celebrate freedom and liberation — and above all, truth. As I’ve reported in the past for the Forward, today is not the celebration of enslaved African Americans learning they were free — because they already knew. Instead, today marks the day when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to force the slaveholders at gunpoint to abide by liberation. The truth of this day matters, and has wide-ranging implications for reckoning with racism in America. As attacks increase on Black people, Jewish people, and those of us who are both, we need brave journalism that brings truth to the foundational myths of our country as well as our present moment.
That’s the work of the Forward, which I’m asking you to support today. |
