MPR News PM Update
May 4, 2020

Dull, overcast, rainy. Starting in western Minnesota tonight, a spring storm is bringing clouds, rain and snow across the state. Much of western Minnesota will see a half-inch or more of precipitation through Tuesday night, while the eastern half of the state sees lighter amounts. Northern Minnesota could see a little light snow mixing overnight but no accumulation is expected.

COVID-19 in Minnesota today: 571 new daily confirmed cases, total death toll rises to 428. The number of confirmed cases on Monday continued to jump as testing accelerates in the state — 7,234 Minnesotans tested positive since the pandemic began. Current hospitalizations, 396, and intensive care cases, 166, also hit new highs.

From $1.5 billion surplus to deficit, how much has COVID-19 affected Minnesota’s budget? Months ago, lawmakers were debating how to spend extra money. This week, state leaders learn if they’ll have to confront a deficit instead. If the budget report shows a looming deficit, officials believe, it will permit them to tap into Minnesota’s $2 billion rainy-day reserves to cover some state expenses.

Rolling around, screaming, crying: How we continue reporting - while staying home with kids. Like many other Minnesotans, MPR News journalists are mostly working from home and taking care of their kids, at the same time.

So, our education reporter Elizabeth Shockman has got some expert advice for herself and fellow Minnesotan parents: “The next time my kid interrupts a Zoom meeting or needs a diaper change when I’m trying to meet a deadline, I’m going to try … to embrace the humor in crazy work-from-home situations and practice compassionate flexibility. And I’m trying to remind myself: This is what being a working parent looks like right now.“
