Res Artis Meeting Tehran, November 2016

‘Roots and Routes: Challenges and Opportunities of Connectivity’ was a 5 day Res Artis meeting of artist residency representatives, artists, funding bodies and cultural workers held between 20 – 25 November 2016 in Tehran, Iran. The Res Artis meeting was facilitated by Kooshk Residency in cooperation with Mohsen Gallery.

The meeting marked a significant milestone in the 23 year history of Res Artis, as our first ever meeting in the Middle East! The concept for the meeting arose from the initiative of new Res Artis Board Member and Curator and Program Manager of Kooshk Residency, Tooraj Khamenehzadeh. It aimed to strengthen local cooperation between arts residency centres, artists and cultural institutions in Iran and the wider Middle East region, while at the same time providing an opportunity to forge international ties and collaborations.

Approximately 60 attendees from 21 countries were able to experience the local contemporary arts scene in Tehran through dedicated meeting sessions and two days of cultural excursions. In addition, international speakers presented different residency models and discussed the most pressing issues in the arts residency field today through panel sessions, lectures, roundtables and interactive workshops. Topics were diverse and included Sustainability, Funding the Field and the Importance of Local and International Networks.

A major outcome was the announcement that Res Artis will again partner with Kooshk Residency in 2017 to host a smaller more focused regional meeting to encourage greater interaction, knowledge and skill-sharing between arts residency centres in the Middle East.

For most participants, this was their first journey to Iran. We hope the meeting forged important international connections and knowledge for them that will result in new partnerships and collaborations.

Eliza Roberts (Australia) appointed inaugural Executive Director of Res Artis

Res Artis is delighted to announce the appointment of Eliza Roberts (Australia) as the inaugural Executive Director of Res Artis. Eliza commenced the role on November 1st.

Eliza’s role focuses on fundraising, public profile and strategy for the organisation. Eliza served on the Res Artis Board of Directors from 2012 – 2016, including a 2 year term as Vice-President from 2014.

President of Res Artis, Leena Vuotovesi (Finland) says “Res Artis is proud to announce Eliza’s appointment to this brand new role. The field of artist residencies has rapidly expanded in recent years, and this announcement marks a significant milestone in our 23 year history to take Res Artis to the next level, and elevate our unique world-wide approach.” 

For the past 6 years Eliza worked as Arts Residencies Manager at Asialink, Australia’s largest and most long-standing artist residency program in the region. Eliza has diverse experience in the arts industry, having worked at a range of local and international institutions and organisations including Christie’s auction house in London, The Ian Potter Museum of Art and Artbank. Eliza speaks intermediate level Indonesian and holds a MA Art Curatorship and BA Creative Arts, both from the University of Melbourne.

Eliza says of the role “I feel honoured to become the inaugural Executive Director of Res Artis and proud to represent Australia in this capacity – It is testament to the unique global positioning of the organisation. I look forward to expanding my skills and knowledge of the field within a broader International context. I have a big vision for the organisation that will harness our regional strategy, and I look forward to actively engaging with Res Artis members, like-minded organisations and stakeholders to hear your ideas and strengthen the field together.”

Eliza is based in Melbourne, Australia. She is committed to interacting with the Res Artis headquarters in Amsterdam and members all over the globe, so don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Lea O’Loughlin appointed new Vice-President of the Board of Res Artis

Following Eliza Roberts who served as Vice-President of the board for two years prior to assuming her new role as Executive Director of Res Artis, Lea O’Loughlin has been appointed the new Vice-President of the Board of Res Artis.

Lea manages Acme Studios International Residencies Programme  and has been the board’s Secretary for the last two years. On her new role she says: “I am very excited to be stepping into the role of vice-president of the board for Res Artis and look forward to supporting the fresh creative leadership of our recently appointed Executive Director. The residencies sector continues to evolve in response to our changing world and Res Artis is committed to fostering this development. Along with my fellow board members, I share an enthusiasm for helping our members to navigate and adapt to these changes in meaningful ways.”

Res Artis participated in panel session on Networks, Artists in Residencies and Cultural Exchanges, Malta

Res Artis Executive Director, Eliza Roberts, spoke at the panel session "Networks, Artists in Residency and Cultural Exchanges" on Thursday 2nd February 2017 at St. James Cavalier, Valletta , Malta. The session formed part of the ACMlab series and was organised by Arts Council Malta, in collaboration with Spazju KreattivFresh Arts Coalition Europe and the European Culture Networks. This session specifically targeted artists interested in getting to know more about artist residencies and cultural exchanges happening locally and internationally.

Res Artis attended Culture Action Europe (CAE) conference Beyond the Obvious

Res Artis attended the conference Beyond the Obvious by Culture Action Europe (CAE) in Budapest, Hungary from 26 - 28 January 2017. The conference took place in a building, called the Whale, consisting of reused warehouses on the Danube banks with a great view on Danube and the Castle hill. Instead of classical speeches and discussions the format consisted of talks with invited “speakers” in the plenary sessions and moderated workshops in three dedicated parallel streams. The three streams were Ideas (generate ideas), Stories (learn about examples), and Scenarios (think about the future) and the three topics Creative Chaos (enlightening the socio-political and environmental crises), Polymorphic Europe (bridging a composite Europe through cultural leadership), and Thriving Cities (placing culture(s) in sustainable urban development). This resulted in a scheme with nine sessions in three time slots with the topics shifting along the streams.

Karol Frühauf, Honorary Board Member of Res Artis said about the conference: “The structure of the conference stimulated all of the nearly 200 participants to contribute and also made it easy for them to get in contact with each other. The usual problem with parallel streams that you inevitably miss some remained unsolved but the conference became a very casual atmosphere and resulted in a lot of discussions. We exchanged ideas, experienced the European diversity and returned home with new friends with similar interests.” 

RES

Res Artis is part of a project called RES which is a unified search tool for residencies that is currently being developed. Res Artis board member Kira Simon-Kennedy from China Residencies is joining Rate My Artist Residency and Residency Unlimited in a coalition to build a new web-based solution to better unify and disseminate information around artist residencies. RES will be prototyped, developed, and tested throughout 2016-2017 in New York as part of NEW INC, the New Museum’s cultural incubator dedicated to supporting innovation, collaboration, and entrepreneurship across art, design, and technology.
