Registration for the first Res Artis Meeting in the Middle East is open now! The meeting under the title âRoots and Routes: Challenges and Opportunities of Connectivityâ will be hosted by Kooshk Residency in Tehran, Iran from November 21-25.
Through a number of panels, roundtable discussions and workshops sessions, the meeting will address the different interpretations and inherent implications history and traditions bear for residency spaces as well as shedding light on the importance of artistsâ pathways and connectivity of residencies.
Against the backdrop of the cultural landscape in Iran and its placement in the wider region, participants can contextualize and discuss different approaches to artist residencies as well as topics like sustainability and funding with regard to their own region.

âRimbun Dahan, Malaysia âFrom 20 to 23 July Res Artis collaborated with Rimbun Dahan, Malaysia to host the Res Artis Meeting of Southeast Asian Arts Residencies, supported by the Goethe-Institut Malaysia. The purpose of the meeting was to establish stronger networks between residencies in Southeast Asia, particularly in the ASEAN region. Participants included residency organisation from 16 ASEAN member nations, as well as representatives from 4 non-ASEAN residencies who had an interest in engaging with the region. Topics included the importance of location in residencies, institutional programming of residencies, alumni networks and support, resources and âglocalâ networks. Res Artis Board member and Founding Director of Akademie Schloss Solitude in Stuttgart, Jean-Baptiste Joly participated as guest moderator and delivered a keynote presentation around the topic of Interdisciplinary residencies.
Rimbun Dahan were incredibly generous hosts and opened their residency and their home to all participants. Attendees contributed their personal experiences in the field with honesty and enthusiasm, which made for an incredibly dynamic discussion. We visited key residencies spaces in Kuala Lumpur including Lostgens Contemporary Art Space, Shalini Ganendra Fine Art and Space Toccata. The key outcomes of the meeting were the formation of the ASEAN Arts Residency Network and development of a Facebook group to encourage ongoing interaction. It is hoped that the conversation will continue through a further meeting in 2017 in a different ASEAN country. â

Goodbye from Mark Vennegoor - Res Artis Director 
Dear friends,
After more than 6 years working for Res Artis, currently in the position of director, I will be leaving by the end of October. It has been a privilege working with people dedicated to the arts, decisive to create opportunities for others and enjoying and cherishing the diversity of the world and the fruits that art bring.
I am grateful that I have been able to contribute to Res Artis as it exists today, as I believe artist residencies fulfill an important role in the art field. Over the past years the amount of Res Artis members have significantly increased and also the residency field has been growing resulting in more and more artist residency opportunities for artists. I hope this growth and support for the residency field will continue so that all artists independent of the stage of their career and where they are from, can explore his/her practice in the framework of another community; meeting new people, using new materials and experiencing life in a new location.
The coming time I will be shaping my future, in which I wish to focus more on my own art practice in order to expand projects like www.smoothietakeover.com and Denim Economics. Furthermore I want to spend more time on the social enterprise www.happeebaggee.com that I started recently with my wife to provide an income for Guatemalan women. I am full of energy to go further on these adventures and see what the future will bring. I will remain connected to the residency field and hopefully we meet in the future.
