The meeting âExploring Sustainability under the Midnight Sunâ will take place in partnership with the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and the City of Rovaniemi (http://www.visitrovaniemi.fi/) in Rovaniemi, Lapland, Finland from 18 â 20 June 2018. This 3-day meeting will address the theme of Residencies and Sustainability from different angles â The sustainability of the arts residencies field; Indigenous aspects; Interdisciplinary residencies; the intersections between curators and residencies; and the concept of âethical tourismâ. Questions that will be discussed include: How can residency operators pursue their activities to better meet the principles of sustainability? How can residencies contribute to sustainable regional development? And what is the social and economic impact of residencies? The event will take place in the remote but culturally dynamic and vibrant Arctic region at the height of the Midnight Sun, offering a topical location for the meetingâs focus on sustainability. Participants from all over the globe are invited to experience the unique environmental arts scene of Northern Finland and learn more about Indigenous aspects to residencies and the need for ethical tourism through the local Sami people. Update on the Res Artis Meeting in Copenhagen The meeting âPrepare for Production: On Residencies and Artistic Productionâ will be hosted by Danish Art Workshops (DAW) and FABRIKKEN / The Factory of Art and Design in Copenhagen, Denmark from October 25-27.We have been busy working on updating the programme and confirming sessions and speakers. Registration closes on 25 September. Introducing four new Res Artis Board Members We received a total of 26 very promising nominations in response to our call out for new Res Artis board members. Thank you to everyone who submitted their application and to everyone who took the time to cast their vote. We are very pleased to welcome, Sarah Gardner, Raquel Camara Lopez, Luigi Galimberti and Vincent Liew Weh Siang, as the four new members of the Res Artis Board of Directors. Sarah Gardner was also appointed the new Secretary of the Board. We are looking forward to seeing the mark they will leave on the work of our organisation. Please find below a short introduction of the newly appointed board members. Sarah Gardner (Australia) is a freelance consultant and advisor on international networks and cultural policy with over 25 years as a leader in the culture sector. She was the founding Executive Director of IFACCA, the global network of arts councils and ministries of culture with members in 70 countries, from 2001 to 2017. For the ten years prior to that, she held various senior executive roles at the Australia Council for the Arts, principally as the Director, Strategy and Policy. She was formerly the Director of Public Affairs for the Australian Bicentennial Authority, a consultant in the private and public sectors for the leading Australian firm Issues Australia, technical manager for German company, Schering AG, and worked freelance in England, Italy, Scotland and Spain. Sarah has a BSc and Masters in Public Policy from the University of Sydney and edited the IFACCA report âInternational Perspectives on Artist Residenciesâ. In 2015 she was appointed to the expert panel for the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions. Raquel Cámara (Spain) is a cultural manager and researcher. In 2013, she founded Mapping Residencies and Contemporary Art (MR&), a non-profit association whose mission is to contribute to the research and knowledge of creative spaces and contemporary art production. One of Mapping Residencies' activities is the publication of a bilingual (English/Spanish) magazine specializing in artists' residencies and cultural policies. As a cultural researcher, Raquel has collaborated with many art publications; in 2011 she was responsible for the start-up of an online database for Artist-in-Residence Programs in Europe, commissioned by the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport. While working for the Association of Visual Artists in Madrid (AVAM) in 2007-2010, she participated in a number of campaigns to advance the professional status of visual artists. Luigi Galimberti (Italy) had been the director of Transnational Dialogues, an exchange and research programme for artists, curators, designers and architects across Brazil, China and several European countries from 2012 to 2016. Transnational Dialogues is run by the NGO European Alternatives, which Luigi has been collaborating with since 2006. Luigi holds a bachelor degree in sociology from the London School of Economics and a master degree in management for the arts and culture from IULM University. He has more than seven years of experience working as a project manager in publicly funded projects in the cultural sector, and was awarded the Chartered Manager status by the Chartered Management Institute (UK) in March 2017. Luigi is currently Collection Care Research Manager at Tate in London. Vincent Liew (Singapore) is a published, multi-award winning visual artist and photography educator. His works primarily centre on the subsistence of people and nature within their environment. The use of complimentary colours is a recurring motif in Vincentâs work and he had exhibited in more than 30 countries. Vincent currently serves as a board member of The Photographic Society of Singapore, the country representative of the Global Photographic Union (Europe), member of the enrichment committee of the Photographic Society of America and curator of the Loke Wan Tho Gallery at the Selegie Arts Centre(Singapore). In addition to having strong experience in the strategic development of art organisations he also holds several honorary fellowships from photography organisations across the globe. Vincent has a Master in Business Administration and had previously held leadership roles with a fortune 500 company. He is currently pursuing a research scholarship in photography at the Nanyang Technological Universityâs School of Art, Design and Media. Res Artis launches satellite office in Australia with exhibition New Bearings On 13 July Res Artis launched our first ever satellite office in Melbourne, Australia with the exhibition New Bearings. The show featured video works and documentaries submitted by Res Artis Board Members from China, Finland, Germany, Iran, the UK and Mexico. The videos reflected the geographic diversity of Res Artis and our membership, and demonstrated the impact of residencies and the work of Res Artis for communities, artists and arts residency operators world-wide. The opening event was attended by around 60 representatives from funding bodies, arts councils, arts residency operators, artists, arts workers and philanthropists. Several Res Artis members were in attendance including the Australia Council for the Arts, Bundanon Trust, Asialink and Cowwarr Art Space â one of the most long-serving members of our international network. Long term plans of Res Artis to open satellite offices in other regions have now become a reality in Australia thanks to our generous office sponsors Michael Schwarz and David Clouston. With our headquarters remaining in Amsterdam, this new satellite office marks a significant milestone in the history of our 24 year old network and a turning point for Res Artis in achieving greater visibility and relevance to our members all over the globe. In particular, our new physical presence in Australia will have a significant impact on the local Oceania region.
