Res Artis Conference 2021 Bangkok: Defining the Next Decade
8 – 10 September 2021

Due to the enduring COVID-19 pandemic, our next Res Artis conference has been postponed until 8 – 10 September 2021. We hope to welcome you in-person, and virtual participation options will also be provided.

In partnership with Subhashok the Arts Centre (S.A.C.), Res Artis is excited to announce our next conference will be held in Bangkok, Thailand at Bangkok Arts and Cultural Centre (BACC) supported by the French Embassy in Bangkok and EUNIC.

Titled Defining the Next Decade, the conference will examine the tremendous impact of COVID-19 and future of the international arts residencies field.

The conference will present the results of Res Artis survey data and examine new models of arts residencies that have evolved in response to the pandemic. In particular, we will discuss the rise in local exchange, virtual residencies and digital residency activity that has occurred while physical exchange can’t take place.

Held in the buzzing metropolis of Bangkok, our conference will introduce participants to the rapidly growing gallery and arts landscape of Southeast Asia as well as explore how the city has adapted their cultural dialogue during COVID-19.

A New Chapter for Res Artis
and Goodbye from Birte Gehm,
Res Artis Communications and Operations Manager

As the peak organisation for arts residencies world-wide Res Artis saw the immediate and devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic to our sector.  The repercussions are ongoing, and we would like to acknowledge the hard work and dedication of the Res Artis member residencies that have been lost as a result of this pandemic.

As an organisation whose work is funded by membership income, Res Artis has also needed to make difficult decisions to safeguard the sustainability of our future, including the streamlining of overheads and consolidating our office operations in Melbourne, Australia, where we’ve been operating for the past four years.

In the coming months, Res Artis will officially move its governance and operations from the Netherlands to Australia. This decision has meant saying goodbye to our office in Amsterdam and, unfortunately, to our staff there too.

Many of our members will have liaised with Res Artis Communications and Operations Manager Birte Gehm remotely or met her in-person at our conferences over the years. Birte has been an integral part of Res Artis’ success and will be missed by our staff, Board and membership community. You can read Birte's personal goodbye to our network here.

Whilst a behind the scenes restructure of Res Artis has been necessary, the important work we undertake on behalf of the sector, our global perspective, and our Values, Mission and Vision remain the same.

Despite a drop in membership numbers we continue to support over 550 member organisations in 75 countries worldwide. As we look to the future, there is much to do. We embrace that challenge and opportunity with the strength of our collective diversity and expertise. We are a truly global organisation, with engaged and dedicated Members and Board Members all over the world.

We often talk about residencies within a changing world. The speed of change unleashed by this pandemic is exceptional, however the resilience and adaptability of the residencies sector can more than meet this challenge. From change and adversity comes opportunity.

Already many artists in residence and arts residency centres are learning to adapt to our new environment through digital programming or by providing stay at home or studio residencies, and we have also seen a return to and rise in local, national and regional exchange. Some of your new business models and practices are innovatively and creatively shaping a new future, and we continue to learn from each other.

New Arctic Chapter

As one European chapter of Res Artis closes in the Netherlands, a new one begins. Res Artis is delighted to announce a partnership with the municipality of Ii, in northern Finland. The aim of our collaboration is to continue our important work in Europe and work towards the establishment of an ongoing Res Artis Europe base.

Res Artis welcomes Kai Latvalehto to the role of Project Manager at KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre. Kai holds a PhD from Åbo Akademi (2018) and a MA in English from Oulu University (1995) in Finland. In the past he has worked extensively within music, education and documentary film. In recent years he has concentrated on Sweden-Finnishness and his latest undertaking was establishing a residency program for the Sweden-Finnish Cultural Embassy in Oulu.

This innovative collaboration is supported by the KRIPA project funded by the European Unions Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland coordinated by the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment.

Analytical Report
COVID-19: Impact Survey on the Arts Residency Field
(Survey I of III)

54% of planned residencies cancelled, modified, cut short or postponed.

One in 10 or 9% of arts residency operators forced to close indefinitely.

Just 17% of respondents able to access emergency funding support.

Res Artis and UCL have released an analytical report of a survey examining the impact of COVID-19 on the international arts residencies field. The survey conducted between 7 May and 1 June 2020 received 1,132 responses from 774 artists and 358 arts organisations around the globe. This first survey investigated the pandemic’s immediate effect on in-progress and planned arts residencies, while two further surveys to follow will explore medium and long-term impact.

The primary aim of this survey series is to articulate the challenges and opportunities for the sector during this difficult time. Ultimately, we hope the collaboration, hard data and analysis will lead to positive change by providing information, support and key policy recommendations for artists, arts residency operators, funders and key sector stakeholders.

Res Artis Outreach

The pandemic has brought about significant opportunities for discussion of the arts residencies field. The Res Artis team has been out and about advocating the impact on our sector, need for emergency funding support and the way our members are adapting and responding. Below are a few events where we have represented our membership:

President of the Res Artis Board Lea O’Loughlin participated in the digital symposium Reflecting Residencies. Held from 22 – 23 October the event formed the first symposium in France on arts residency programs and was organized by French residencies network arts en residence. The program focused on the internationalization of French residencies and local development and partnerships.

Lea also presented at Where to? a workshop on mobility for creatives organized by the MAX (MAkers eXchange) project consortium, bringing together mobility users and stakeholders of the cultural and creative sectors to hear, discuss and provide their perspectives and recommendations aiming to design an effective model of mobility for the cultural and creative industries, makers and creatives for skills development and social inclusion.  The workshop was part of the MAX project, co-funded by the European Union and implemented by the European Creative Hubs Network, Fab Lab Barcelona, UPTEC and Makery.

Executive Director Eliza Roberts has been busy highlighting the continuing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic on the arts residencies sector.  Eliza joined choreographer Natasha Sturges, author Craig Silvey and artist Peter Drew on the virtual panel in The Not-in-Transit Lounge: Travelling for Art, the latest instalment from ArtsHub's monthly podcast, The Artshubbub.

In Episode 6 of Kooshk Talk Eliza discussed the continuing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic on arts residencies with Kooshk Residency Executive Manager Maryam Bagheri.

Pro Prac Symposium session On Artist Residencies brought Eliza in conversation with moderator Kiera Brew Kurec and artist and curator Andy Butler, on the purpose and benefits of undertaking both national and international artist residencies as well as economic implications, social media and connectedness in light of COVID-19 times. Pro Prac Symposium was recorded on Saturday 2nd of May and was made possible through the support of City of Melbourne Annual Arts Grants.

Last but not least, Res Artis Board Member Luigi Galimberti presented in The impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Arts & Culture.  This seminar was part of For Artists: Presenting Oneself and Learning the Market, an online initiative curated by K2 Güncel Sanat Merkezi | K2 Contemporary Art Center

A World without Cultural Centres

Our colleagues at Trans Europe Halles have made a video about the devastating effects the COVID-19 pandemic has had on non-governmental cultural centres. Centres all over Europe were forced to stop their activities, cancel their events and close their community spaces, including their bars and restaurants. This video tackles the impact of the pandemic in cultural centres and the vital role that they play in society.
