In our attempts to encourage more students to pursue computer science, we may be focusing too much on skills—robotics; coding; and programming languages such as Python, Java, and C++—and not enough on the terrific opportunities and stimulating work environments such skills make possible. Our current approach is like trying to convince people to become doctors by telling them they’ll get to study gross anatomy and chemistry, writes Oracle Academy’s Alison Derbenwick Miller.
That’s one finding from new research, based on data from 3,612 students in the US that could influence how we structure K–12 computer science education.
