Your gift of any amount will help push back against the Trump administration’s authoritarian attacks on press freedom and free speech. Every dollar you donate is an act of resistance — and hope — that fuels the fight.

Hi There,

With the midterm elections behind us, Free Press is hitting the ground running as we prepare to hold the new Congress accountable and pave the way for a more just media and society. We have no time to lose: The threats against everyone’s rights to connect and communicate are ramping up. In the last two weeks alone:

President Trump escalated his attacks on journalists.

  • At a press conference on Wednesday, Trump insulted and shouted down reporters when they tried to ask him questions (otherwise known as doing their job). Instead of responding, Trump accused the journalists of creating “fake news” and called them “the enemy of the people.”
  • Next, the White House falsely accused CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta of roughing up an intern and then revoked his press pass. Their “evidence”? A doctored video produced by the far-right conspiracy site InfoWars that people like Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders shared on Twitter.1

NBC profited from running the Trump campaign’s racist ad during Sunday Night Football.

  • CNN rejected the dehumanizing ad, which depicted the so-called caravan of migrants in southern Mexico as murderers set to invade the United States and spread violence. NBC aired it before an audience of millions.
  • NBC pulled the ad after a backlash ensued,2 but not before making a load of money off of it.

The Trump administration ramped up its monitoring of social media to preempt anti-government protests in the United States.

  • Motherboard released a story exposing how the U.S. military is funding research into how social-media activity can predict whether mass protests will occur.3 The focus of the research? The social-media posts of Americans who oppose President Trump.

If you’re outraged right now, we’re with you.

As we look to the new Congress, we need our elected officials to do more than campaign against Trump and his enablers. And we need your support as we prepare to push lawmakers to introduce powerful legislation and hold hearings on key issues.

Please make your most generous gift today to fight back against the authoritarian Trump administration and hold the new Congress to the highest standard possible. Whether you give $5, $15, $25 or more, we’re grateful for every single dollar.

We’re different from other nonprofits. There’s no business, political party or government agency handing us checks — we don’t take their money.

Maintaining our independence is so important to us that we rely solely on foundation grants and donations from people like you. That means your gifts fuel everything we’re doing to build the just and humane media people need and deserve.

With thanks—

Candace, Carrie and the rest of the Free Press Action team

P.S. Your generous gift today of any amount will help us stand strong against the Trump administration’s authoritarian attacks on press freedom, free speech and a democratic media — and push the new Congress to do the same. Thank you!
