Dear Friend,
Welcome back to my Week in Review newsletter. Please remember to follow me on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube for regular updates on how I am serving the people of South Carolina!
Supporting Our Military
This week, I voted for the bipartisan National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to bolster our national defense and give our service members a well-deserved pay raise. While President Joe Biden had initially requested tens of billions of dollars in cuts to our military, Congress responded by increasing military funding, sending a resounding message of support for our troops.
The bill also contains multiple wins for South Carolina and its military bases! I’m proud to represent a leading military state and will continue to advocate for our brave troops who serve our nation at home and abroad. You can read more about this year’s NDAA here.
Protecting Your Child Care
The Democrats have called their massive tax-and-spending bill “transformational,” and unfortunately, they’re right. The policies in this bill will negatively impact the lives of all Americans—including our children.
This week, I led a press conference with Senator Richard Burr (R-N.C.) to call out the Democrats’ destructive child care proposals, which would eliminate parents’ options, nearly double child care costs, and steal hope from families who deserve better from their government. Defending Religious Liberty
In another move that puts children’s futures at risk, the Biden administration recently reversed protections for faith-based adoption and foster care agencies in South Carolina, Michigan, and Texas. This reckless action will force many providers to choose between abandoning their religious beliefs or closing their doors.
On behalf of the 400,000 children who depend on our foster care system, I led a letter with Representative Ralph Norman (R-S.C.), asking the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to explain this attack on religious liberty. Read more about the letter here.
Pushing Back on Big Government
In keeping with their efforts to permanently enlarge the federal government, the Democrats are also attempting to turn the Small Business Administration (SBA) into a direct lender. This misguided action would force community banks and local credit unions to compete with a massive government agency, causing many private sector institutions to shutter. My colleague Senator John Kennedy (R-La.) and I introduced a bill this week to keep that from happening. Read about it here.
Inflation Crisis
In case you missed it, I joined Bill Hemmer and Dana Perino on Fox’s “America’s Newsroom” this week to talk about inflation and how to combat America’s rising prices. Click below to watch our conversation!
