| Can Pismo clams rebound? Pismo clams were once plentiful along the coast; a rake and a little time and you could feast on the beach with a clambake. Until the '80s. when all that feasting, and some other unknown likely effects, depleted their numbers so much they seemed gone for forever. Now several groups have teamed up to figure out how to help the clams make a comeback. And somehow a taco holder might be a key to the puzzle of how to help cultivate new populations. Landlocked surfing San Juan Capistrano leaders are taking proposals for how a large open property the city has – miles from the coast – could be developed for more recreation, and one pitch is for Orange County’s first man-made wave pool. Already, the USA Surf Team, based in San Clemente, has told city leaders it could be the official training center for potential future Olympians. "We know it’s a new concept we're introducing to the community, but we hope they see the value in it and get excited about the opportunity for the community," Pacifico Development Harrison Taylor said while showing community members renderings of what’s proposed, which is a lot more than just a wave pool. | Waterfront concerts An outdoor, 6,200-seat amphitheater large enough to host a pretty major concert is one of the main attractions of San Pedro’s future waterfront development. The required environmental studies are starting now, but while that happens plenty of other development at the waterfront is progressing, officials said. The amphitheater is planned so it can also be used for smaller community events, but for the bigger events, concert-promoter Nederlander is involved. Read the story. |

Hosted by the Long Beach Yacht Club, the prestigious five-day competition is dubbed the “granddaddy” of modern match racing. More than 10 teams from five countries are racing. Read the story. |
