This year marked the tenth anniversary of the only student competition held on the Chinese mainland, the UIA-HYP Cup International Student Competition in Architectural Design. Around 1500 groups of students registered for the competition. The international jury for the UIA-HYP Cup met at Tianjin University to determine the winners of the 2021 edition, for which jury chair Rem Koolhaas selected the topic: “Countryside Dilemmas - New Rural Planning”.
The theme of UIA-HYP Cup, organised by the School of Architecture, Tianjin University and Urban Environment Design (UED) Magazine, is always “Architecture in Transformation,” but the specific focus changes every year. For the 2021 edition, participants were invited to reflect the increasing divide between urban and rural in today’s world and on how design could be used to provide improve quality of life for people living in rural areas.
The international jury recognised 34 works including 1 First Prize, 3 Second Prizes, 8 Third Prizes, 22 Honorable Mentions.
The jury awarded First Prize to Zhao Chenchen, Ma Qirui and Zheng Qi from the School of Architecture, Tianjin University (People’s Republic of China) for their project, “Civilization to the Years”. Jury chair Rem Koolhaas admired the student winners’ idea of combining the rehabilitation of the countryside with the reinvention of education, which the students “explored in a creative and sensitive manner.”
