NEW!  FROM THE ARCHIVES: The Best of 1982

Mr. Keillor’s tales of the fictional Lake Wobegon, Minn., its people and the businesses that “sponsor” the show are the ties that bind the show together. Listeners share in the ups and (mostly) downs of the Lake Wobegon Whippets baseball team, study the menu of Dorothy’s Chatterbox Cafe, wonder how Lake Wobegon’s favorite daughter, Barbara Ann Bunson, is doing at the University of Minnesota, cheer the attributes of Powdermilk Biscuits (made from whole wheat grown in the rich bottomlands of the Lake Wobegon valley by Norwegian bachelor farmers). From the Archives is a deep dive into the PHC archive, unearthing stories season by season. And here is the collection featuring the stories from 1982. Lake Wobegon experiences extreme cold and shuts people in their homes to feuds, frustrations, plumbing issues, and other crazy antics. There are memories of romance with Donna Bunsen at the laundromat and the Diener boy’s first drag on a cigarette, landing his car in the pond. In fall, we hear about the demise of Irene Anderson’s 20 oz. tomato and the avalanche of squash from the attic. Christmas is nearly perfect with the exception of Einer’s reading of the Gospel.  3 CDs.

From the Archives: Garrison Keillor's The News from Lake Wobegon - 1981

When asked what made A Prairie Home Companion so special, many fans would answer that it was Garrison Keillor's ability to spin a story.  The radio show was first uplinked to the national grid in 1979, and as the show gained a larger audience, Garrison continued to fill out details of all the happenings in Lake Wobegon, his fictional hometown.  It was supposedly always "a quiet week in Lake Wobegon," but it's funny how much can happen during a year of quiet weeks .

"I think the monologue was around 8 to 10 minutes for a long time.  I never did know how to get into it, and then I came up with that first line, which solved the problem so nicely . . . You can't imagine how liberating that is; to not have to go out on stage and explain why you're going to say this." - Garrison Keillor, 1987

This collection gathers together 21 stories that originally aired in 1981 and are themed from January thru December, many of which pre-date the introduction of 'it's been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon."

From Diane Nordeberg becoming Snow Queen,  Father Emil turning 70,  spring cleaning and planting season,  to the history of the volunteer Fire Department, learning the importance of the warming house, finding out how the Lake Wobegon Whippets are faring to the concluding story with the Christmas Story being re-told Lake Wobegon style.

Over 3 hours of stories that will return you to your favorite small town and it's many wonders:  The Chatterbox Cafe, Our Lady of Perpetual Responsibility, The Sidetrack Tap, Wally "Old Hard Hands" Memorial Staduim, the statue of the Unknown Norwegian . . . these stories will captivate and charm you while providing a few laughs, chuckles and tears.
