Many veterans, despite extensive training and work experience, have difficulty finding work in the private sector, often for lack of credentials or professional networks. Some organizations have created initiatives aimed at addressing these issues and helping veterans be successful in the workplace.
A survey by Willis Towers Watson in mid-February found nearly half of the 158 businesses included are implementing plans for remote work because of the coronavirus outbreak. Employers such as Merck, Twitter and Salesforce already have implemented plans, and many employers are restricting travel or canceling nonessential events.
Chipotle Mexican Grill will test unlimited paid time off for its approximately 130 senior staffers, and will evaluate the program before deciding whether to offer it to more employees, the company said. The chain will also expand maternity leave for employees to 12 weeks and offer four weeks to adoptive parents and new fathers.
Rep. Rosa DeLauro, D-Conn., and Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., have introduced a bill requiring employers to offer an additional 14 days of paid sick leave during a public health emergency. The lawmakers said they were concerned that sick employees would go to work anyway because of a lack of paid leave, and spread viruses, such as the novel coronavirus.
