According to James S. Kennedy, MD, CCS, CDIP, a coma is any form of unconsciousness, given that the ICD-10-CM Index to Diseases classifies the term “unconsciousness” with coma. Patients must be unarousable to stimuli, such as voice, pain, or inner need. Terms like “semicoma” or “obtundation” are still clinically coma, however, the provider must document coma or unconsciousness for a coma code to be reported.
