The program evaluation committee (PEC) should review the overall educational goals of the program to see if all activities are aligned with the goals. The ACGME does not assign responsibility to formulate these goals to any particular person or committee, allowing each program to design goals as it sees fit. It is inevitable that a program director will have to address the issue of a resident who is having difficulties performing the expected duties of a physician-in-training. Resident deficiencies may involve any one of the six competencies of the ACGME: patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, practice-based learning and improvement, and systems-based practice.
