| | | | đ¶ALL SHOWS ARE NOW AT THE DENVER PERFORMING ARTS COMPLEXđ¶
1080 14th Street | | Check out CBS Coloradoâs coverage of our opening night. | | The Gift of Jazz welcomes back the Chie Imaizumi Little Big Band with special guests Randy Brecker and Greg Gisbert September 27th & 28th! | | Gift of Jazz presents a grand reunion show with composer Chie Imaizumi (former Denver resident) and trumpet celebrity Randy Brecker, joined and organized by local icon Greg Gisbert. Chie Imaizumi, Japanese composer, established herself in Denver as a strong force in big band music before moving to Los Angeles. Her musical style is sensitive yet explosive, capturing her personal stories. Randy Brecker, who needs little introduction with his 7 Grammys and time with the Brecker Brothers, works closely with Chie along with local phenom Greg Gisbert. This two-night, four show event is a coming together of these outstanding artists, who are frequent collaborators. They will be supported by a stellar âLittle Big Bandâ for a series of concerts that will reverberate in our city for years to come.Â
When Chie lived in Denver, she formed a "little big band" that recorded her first album of original pieces entitled "Unfailing Kindness". Her compositions are very personal, each telling a story of her unique journey and experiences, which she shares with the audiences. Facing many challenges as a woman in Japan trying to succeed in a "man's world," Gift of Jazz and the Denver Jazz scene helped support Chieâs roots when she moved here. Chie was one of the very first educators for Gift of Jazzâs adult education classes, and she won our hearts from the start. This two-night, four-show gig represents her first return to Denver as a Little Big Band since moving to Los Angeles. Chie is extremely excited to be presenting her music with a group of musicians so near and dear to her.Â

| | The Jason Marsalis Quartet
Thursday, August 31 - 7:00PM
Jason Marsalis was born in New Orleans, LA on March 4, 1977. He was the sixth son of Ellis and Dolores Marsalis and the fourth son, after Branford, Wynton, and Delfeayo, to pursue music. During his senior year in high school in 1994, Marsalis ascended to the drum throne of a new group lead by virtuoso pianist and former sideman for Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts.
While Marsalis made appearances with such international jazz luminaries as Joe Henderson and Lionel Hampton, he was visible on the New Orleans scene working with a diverse cross section of bands from Casa Samba (Brazilian), Neslort (jazz fusion) Summer Stages (childrenâs theater), Dr. Michael White (traditional jazz) and many others. It was in 1998 that he cofounded the Latin-jazz group Los Hombres Calientes. In recent years, Jason has worked more with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Heâs recorded three albums, âThe Ever Fonky Lowdownâ, âA Swinginâ Sesame Street Celebrationâ, the latter also being a TV special, and âSwing Symphonyâ with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Robertson. Marsalis is currently teaching adjunct at the John J. Cali School of Music at Montclair State University in New Jersey.
