Jobs, hurricanes and a webinar
The dollar is trading firmer despite weekly jobless claims increasing from 209,000 to 219,000. Whilst this would've normally be interpreted as a slowdown in the economy (which is bullish for the dollar), the reason for the increase is attributed to Hurricane Ian causing havoc in Florida. Even a sharp increase in the number of job cuts couldn't stop the dollar, which took the rand back above R17.90.
This is merely a taste of the reaction we could get to US non-farm payroll numbers today.
