It's Monday and Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Top of Mind Today

  • After 537 days in custody, U.S. Navy Lt. Ridge Alkonis was released Friday morning by order of the U.S. Parole Commission after a review of the facts of a car crash that killed two people near Mount Fuji in Japan. Alkonis said he lost consciousness after driving down from a hike and U.S. Navy investigators ruled that he passed out due to altitude sickness. But a Japanese judge decided that Alkonis had fallen asleep at the wheel and sentenced him to three years in prison for negligence. The fallout over the case has strained diplomatic ties between Japan and the United States.

Quote of the Day

“Here is the true meaning and value of compassion and nonviolence, when it helps us to see the enemy’s point of view, to hear his questions, to know his assessment of ourselves. For from his view we may indeed see the basic weaknesses of our own condition, and if we are mature, we may learn and grow and profit from the wisdom of the brothers who are called the opposition.” — The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
